Oscar Broadcast

I heard on the radio this morning that the Oscar broadcast is going to end with a large musical tribute. That's it...

ALso, while this might not be the final #, the cast of Les Mis and members of various Les Mis productions will be performing...

I will be watching the Amazing Race and Walking Dead during the broadcast, but the Les Mis ensemble definitely has me planning to DVR the Oscar broadcast so I can watch this performance.

I always try to watch the Oscars from gavel to gavel, so to speak. I just love the atmosphere and the feeling of continuity from the earliest days of movies to now. The funny thing is that I don't generally see any of the movies by Oscar time, but it doesn't lessen my enjoyment one iota.

I'm eager to see the Les Mis performers now! Thanks for the alert. I hope they feature one of my favorite Valjeans, Tommy Korberg of Sweden. He also sings in English. Sigh, they probably won't. They did show him in the tenth anniversary production, where at the end over a dozen Valjeans from all around the world took turns singing lines of "Do You Hear the People Sing" in their own languages.

Okay, this Oscar "Les Mis" segment was gorgeous. Gorgeous. Just watching them drift out onstage, and then seeing the emotion each of them could project, both visually and vocally, was so splendid. And I just love everyone's voices. I've loved Hugh Jackman for a long time--wish the Oscar could have been a tie, because he so deserves one. Anne Hathaway has a lovely voice too, and then Eddie Redmayne and the others...well, maybe except for Russell Crowe. You could see how they all enjoy performing together.

The other music was grand as well. Jennifer Hudson is getting better and better, and to see Streisand sing in tribute to Hamlisch, and then Adele with that amazing Bond song. And Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron are good dancers! (Besides both being drop-dead stunning.) This is one of the main reasons I watch the show, because some people known for their faces or their bodies or their screen presence turn out to be talented in actual live ways.

As for the awards, I just wish that the Quentin Tarantino movie hadn't won quite so many awards. When they gave the best supporting Oscar to Waltz instead of Tommy Lee Jones or Alan Arkin or, gee, Robert De Niro!--I was in distress. Then to give it to Tarantino for screenplay! Drat.

I watched the red carpet prelude and was very impressed by Lara Spencer as an announcer. Kristin Chenoweth was so awkward (and I love her singing, mind you), but Lara was as smooth as silk. At one moment, she was interviewing Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, and Urban really has nothing to do at the Oscars this year but be arm candy (and is he ever candy! A handsome gent), and after talking to Nicole about her onstage task, Spencer shifted so naturally to a question directed specifically to Urban. That's not so easy to do.

As for the outfits, some of the fussiest ones didn't do it for me. I liked the color of Jennifer Garner's dress but not that froufrou back, but this woman will never look less than spectacular. I was wowed by Naomi Watts' outfit and Charlize Theron's short hair. I can't think of anything else, but there were some awesome gowns there.

I thought Anne sounded terrible in comparison to the others.

In her defense, it's hard to sound better than Hugh Jackman.

I haven't seen the show in years, but I DVRed it so I could fast forward through all the junk.
( Sad article in the paper yesterday all about how the awards are rigged.....sigh...I guess I am not suprised)
The highlight for me was the ensemble singing of the Les Mis song.
I will watch that again. Of course DDL's award was well deserved. Many of the awards had one scratchng their heads....
The boob song was wonderful!!! I don’t care if it made those actresses uncomfortable....they sold their nudity for money....and the one that didn’t did a double fist pump....it was wonderful....
The joke about "getting inside Lincoln's head” was disgusting......I am surprised he didnt mention something about JFK's brains going everywhere too....

Jennifer Lawrence handled her trip on the stairs well. Don't they usually have escorts to assist the ladies? None were around. I think Hugh Jackman got out of his seat to help her, but she waved him off.


Love Hugh Jackman. Would love to see him on Broadway - if he ever performs on Broadway again, I'd look into buying tickets.


I really liked Daniel Day Lewis's speech as related to appreciating his wife putting up with all the characters he's brought home.

I'm not sure if I cared for the theme of this year's broadcast. Yes, I enjoyed the music and performances, but it felt more like Grammy's vs Oscar. I actually thought Adele held back on Skyfall. I doubt Streisand would've performed for anyone other than Hamlisch - lovely.

Wasn't surprised by Channing Tatum's dancing since he got his break in Step Up, where he also met his wife. They seem like an incredibly happy couple on the red carpet. Charlize Theron's dancing was a surprise. Also enjoyed Daniel Radcliffe's hoofing.

Forget to mention that I was not a fan of Kristen Chenoworth's hosting skills on the red carpet. It just seemed awkward - all her comments were about how she felt.... also, she's so petite that everyone looked gigantic next to her. Of course, Lara Spencer did a better job as she is a professional host, but I though Kelly Rowland also did a nice job on the red carpet.

I always wonder why the Oscars go over their broadcast time. With all the 'bits' in between and knowing the speeches run over, shouldn't they just automatically extend it? The 'big' final # didn't even get aired for Kristen Chenoworth. Or, instead of having the presenters 'banter' before announcing the non-main awards, just announce the nominees and the winner.

I forgot about women being escorted! Yes, I think they used to be. And I was dissappointed they didnt put Andy Griffith in the memorial section. Yes, he was mostly a TV guy, but still......

Griffith was in a couple of excellent films, and I agree that he deserved to be in the section.

I am bummed! Ref: ARGO. Did anyone see it and was it labled as historical fiction? Today in the paper they had an interview with one of the hostages that got out on a Canadian Passport.
He says its a nice movie but fiction...not history....He was rescued first by the Swedish embassy, moved in with the CAnadian ambassidor and then given a Canadian Passport with the cover
of the fiticious scouting party for a film called Argo. There was no drama...no gunfire, car chases..no drama at all. They got on a plane and left.

I have no problem with true historical fiction as long as it is labled as such. Of course, we will never know much of history, even in Lincoln's case. A screen writer has the option to do the best they can in historical accuracy. And I am sure the actual mission took lots of planning from lots of good people to pull off the ruse to get them out. But I think Lincoln was probably much closer to the truth in history than Argo was. I didnt see Argo yet, but right now I think Lincoln was cheated out of the award for best pic. I guess we will have to wonder if Spielberg would have appologized for getting the votes on the ammendment wrong in his acceptance speach....

I quite enjoyed the Oscars - I watch them every year, though I keep wondering why, but it's become quite a tradition for me... Unfortunately for the last years I've been stuck with the inane would-be-witticisms and "deep" insights of "Filip & Fredrik" on Kanal 9 (can't they find someone who actually knows film - like Hans Wiklund for example?!?). To illustrate my torture, I intend merely to mention that they called Liam Neeson "not top-notch" - the context in which it was said was even more head-scratching, but I think that gem will suffice. Trying to follow their "thought processes" might make someone's brain explode....

I have loved Liam since first i saw him. Have no idea what film that would be. But Schindler's list is planets better than "Taken 2." Major bad sequel, even as sequels go. I do like taken 1. Worth renting. Amazing how men can age and still get leading roles without botox. i saw some of the Oscars mainly to see the host and musical segments. Musical segments saved the night. Even streisand at age 70 ? has to have long straight hair?

Oscar = much ado about very few good movies.

I always love the Oscars because they make me aware of the history of film going way back. I very rarely get bored. There's always some feature, some group of announcers, some splendid dress that will make watching it worthwhile. I agree that Liam Neeson was one of the high points this year. The other ones for me were all the musical performances, with Les Mis at the top. As every singer comes out and adds his or her energy to the chorus, the effect intensifies. Then there were the dances, with Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum blissfully romantic and the three guys (including Daniel Radcliffe) hoofing like grand old vaudevillians.
