it is a double axel for liz. Watch it on slo mo you will see it. If anything, it looks like Kadavy singled her double loop, and indeed the double axel is not good... back then, with 6.0 scoring, I would think such an obvious mistake may be costly. I didn't watch Debi, Witt nor Jill... but if you have Ito's short, I would watch it . I admit it's hard to see with these videos.

Oh, thanks a heap! Morning on the first day of a new month and already I feel ancient. The first competition I remember watching was the 1962 Worlds back when CTV was still piggybacking on ABC's filming, adding their own Canadian commentary thanks to superfan Johnny Esaw's enthusiasm for the sport. I probably saw American TV coverage before that, though. I remember my mother and I looking at each other in shock when the radio news reported the plane crash in 1961 that killed the entire US team on their way to that Worlds. We must have seen at least the US championships on an American channel earlier that year to have seen those skaters perform. So I saw Caryn Kadavy probably for most of her career in the 80s, when she and Liz Manley frequently traded positions back and forth. Caryn was a pretty skater, Liz had more fire and sparkle. It just depended on whose style a particular judging panel preferred, or so it looked to me. I wasn't old enough to be much of a judge then.

Another one who watched Caryn Kadavy "in real time" I always loved her elegance, although I also liked Liz Manley's spunk, so it was a trade-off. I wasn't following the women as much so I did not have strong opinions.

But, back before there was the Internet, we relied on television and dead tree newspapers (the kind I still read). I was never part of any skating community, so I knew nothing from those sources. And I knew, somehow from that, that Caryn Kadavy was from Erie, Pa. The other end of the state, in both directions, but I still felt an affinity.

Seems like you could count on her skating Mambo Italiano at least once a year in the shows...

I was at Worlds 1987 in Cincinnati. The most stunning performer, as I remember it, hands down, was Midori Ito, and she was underscored in the artistic score brutally. I was one of the audience who roundly booed the low artistic scores, as you can see we did in the vid. Also, she did not ever do well in figures. Looking at the scores again, you can see the US and German judges even low-balled her tech mark.

Liz Manley was good in the SP, finishing second there, but crashed and burned spectacularly in the FS. Debi was good in the FS but messed up her 2A. and was only 7th in the SP. Debi was very good in figures, finishing 2nd there to Kira Ivanova, who did not do well in either the SP or FS.

. I don't have any clear memory of Caryn there at all, which is may be a clue to why she did not win. She was one of those performer who was more charming on TV than in person. And she was not as fast or as powerful a jumper as Debi, Midori, Liz, or Katarina. I watched the video, and while she was a musical skater, her feet when off the ice were not tidy at all either.

Andrew Torgashev recently gave an interview where he talked about draws for skating competitions. He joked that skaters who draw number one, oh yes, I love going first, draw number 24, I love going last.

She was lovely to watch and really came into another dimension as a pro. She skated for a long time.

I think she came down with the flu in Calgary but I do not think she would of beaten Witt. Say top 5.

She had the misfortune of missing her moment in the Olympics - but she skated a very strong pro career. Probably stayed technically proficient the longest of the class of 88. I ever saw her poorly prepared.

I always enjoyed her skating but always held my breath until she finished her program. What I do remember is her coming down with stomach flu before the Olympics. Felt soooo sorry for her.
