ICE DANCE

The CD will be the Starlight Waltz. Here's the reference file, including stellar performances by star dancers of the past.
http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22884

After winning at Courchevel in a very smooth and convincing fashion, the Shibutanis have to be the favorites to win here, particularly since the CD is the same one skated at Courchevel. However, Riazanova & Guerreiro did not skate their best in Merano, where they finished second to Chock and Zuerlein. They could well finish first here, especially if the Shibutanis don't step it up a bit on the CD portion of the competition versus their Courchevel performance.

Alessandrini and Vaturi, who finished 3rd in Merano should have been in the chase for the bronze, but they have withdrawn and will skate at Sheffield. Several teams that we haven't seen this year could well challenge for that last medal. You might not expect it, but I would be looking forward to seeing the team of Yorgiadis and Hockley, skating for Greece. They had some great performances at LPIDC, and might squeak in for the bronze (and wouldn't that be great!) I believe they train in Canada. Also Tibbetts and Brubaker, who withdrew from LPIDC, should be very competitive for the bronze. I have not seen a performance from Telegina and Adoniev of Russia, but they and Vykhodtseva and Shumski UKR who finished 5th at Courchevel, would fill out my picks for top six based on their score from Russian Nationals. Who are your picks?

Last year this team competed as singles. (Hurtado was the Spanish Novice Champion)
They were scheduled to compete at Mexico, but did not compete. I'm glad to see a Spanish team competing! The more ice dance countries the better, IMO.

Here are some stats for the top teams Doris mentioned.

157.84 28.49 50.46 78.89 Shibutanis-USA, 1st Courchevel
31.08 Starlight Waltz, LPIDC
49.43 OD, LPIDC
72.96 FD, LPIDC

149.42 30.67 48.77 69.98 Riazanova/Guerreiro-RUS, 2nd Merano
153.29 28.69 50.96 73.64 Riazanova/Guerreiro-RUS, 6th JW 08
153.72 29.40 52.11 72.21 Riazanova/Guerreiro-RUS, 2nd JGP GER 07

I think gold and silver will go to these two, in some order. R/G fell in both OD and FD at Merano, which cost them at least 5-6 points. The Shibutanis have probably been working their CD since Courchevel, but remember that R/G did the Paso Doble--an easier CD--in Merano, so their JGP CD scores aren't comparable.

Here are stats for what I think are the teams competing for the bronze (no particular order):

144.84 28.68 44.90 71.26 Tibbetts/Brubaker-USA, Pha Challenge Cup
142.75 27.48 45.73 69.54 Tibbetts/Brubaker-USA, 5th, JGP CRO 2007

133.08 27.57 45.45 60.06 Vykhodtseva/Shumski-UKR, 7th Courchevel
142.56 28.24 46.77 67.55 Vykhodtseva/Shumski-UKR, 3rd JGP BUL 07
141.02 26.39 44.72 69.91 Vykhodtseva/Shumski-UKR, 4th JGP AUT 07

I think the Ukrainians could challenge if they skate back to their 2007-2008 form, because those stats match up very closely with Tibbetts/Brubaker's.

I would also not rule out the new Russian team Telegina/Adoniev as a contender, simply because the two earlier new teams skated very well in previous JGP events.

I'm not that thrilled with Georgiadis/Hockley. Here are their stats:

119.66 26.50 40.42 52.74 Georgiadis/Hockley-GRE, Thornhill
40.75 61.89 Georgiadis/Hockley-GRE, LPIDC OD and FD

Their OD scores are 4-5 points lower than T/B and V/S, and their best FD score is way lower than T/B's. Even with improvement, I think they still come up short.

Colin Brubaker, should be the Pairs skater at 6'1" instead of Rockne.5'10" (I think)

But Pasta and chocolate milk, just don't seem right. Not with a nice chianti near.;)
