In her various diplomatic activities on behalf of the United States, Michelle has has always been aware of her role of representing the AAPI community in particular. I have wondered if she has an opinion about Belize's relations with China and Taiwan.

Belize is one of a tiny handful of nations that officially maintains the "One China Doctrine," with the government in Taipei being the "one China" and the government in Beijing viewed as illegitimate. In exchange, Belize enjoys valuable economic relations with Taiwan, including assistance and investments in the technology sector. In January of this year Taiwan appointed a new ambassador to Belize, Lili Li-Wen Hsui (the first woman ambassor from Taiwan to Belize), and just last month the president of Taiwan paid an official state vist to Belize to shore up relations after neighboring Honduras switched over to Beijing. Prseident Tsai also visited Guatemala on the trip, fearing a domino effect in the region. (The border conflict between Guatemala and Belkize, with Guatemala claiming that treaties from the era of British colonialism gives it legal ownership of much if not all of Belize, remains unnresolced to this day.)

BY the way, gymnast Simone Biles has dual United States - Belize citizenship and could in principle represent Belize in that Olympic sport.
