This is an odd field of ladies.
We have here Cynthia Phaneuf, once Canadian champion, who has struggled with injuries and growth . And we have Myriane Samson whom Phaneuf as Canadian Senior champion displaced at Jr Worlds. Samson has also had serious injuries and fought back. Joannie Rochette, many times Canadian champion, who somehow never quite completely lays it down at Worlds, is of course here.
Bebe Liang, poster child for skating at US Seniors too young, after finally participating in her first Worlds at age 19. Alissa Czisny, who has the fanciest set of coaches and choreographers working with her that I have ever seen: Brian Boitano, Linda Leaver, Yuka Sato, Kurt Browning, and David Wilson as well as Julianne Berlin are all listed. Alissa has been a poster child for graceful, flexible and charming inconsistency. She skated beautifully at Liberty and Nebelhorn, but Alissa is capable of excelling one day and bombing the next. We have the lovely Caroline Zhang, probably the most flexible skater around, who also has some of the most controversial jump technique.
Fumie Suguri who has been somewhere at the top of Japanese Ladies skating forever is here. And Nana Takeda, who is the Bebe Liang of Japanese skating-a skater who has not yet made it to the top 3 at Nationals.
We have the tall and speedy Carolina Kostner who has some of the most controversial landings around. And we also have a fine threesome of European skaters, Jenni Vahamaa, Jenna McCorkell and Elena Glebova.
If you look at the rankings, Kostner should run away with this competition with Rochette a strong second. But giving the inconsistency of all the skaters here, coupled with the new strictness about underrotation and correct edging, this competion sizes up to be a cross between a soap opera and a craps game.
Pass the popcorn and the chips. It's going to be a long weekend
My prayer is that no one feels that this competition was decided by the technical specialist corps.

We have here Cynthia Phaneuf, once Canadian champion, who has struggled with injuries and growth . And we have Myriane Samson whom Phaneuf as Canadian Senior champion displaced at Jr Worlds. Samson has also had serious injuries and fought back. Joannie Rochette, many times Canadian champion, who somehow never quite completely lays it down at Worlds, is of course here.
Bebe Liang, poster child for skating at US Seniors too young, after finally participating in her first Worlds at age 19. Alissa Czisny, who has the fanciest set of coaches and choreographers working with her that I have ever seen: Brian Boitano, Linda Leaver, Yuka Sato, Kurt Browning, and David Wilson as well as Julianne Berlin are all listed. Alissa has been a poster child for graceful, flexible and charming inconsistency. She skated beautifully at Liberty and Nebelhorn, but Alissa is capable of excelling one day and bombing the next. We have the lovely Caroline Zhang, probably the most flexible skater around, who also has some of the most controversial jump technique.
Fumie Suguri who has been somewhere at the top of Japanese Ladies skating forever is here. And Nana Takeda, who is the Bebe Liang of Japanese skating-a skater who has not yet made it to the top 3 at Nationals.
We have the tall and speedy Carolina Kostner who has some of the most controversial landings around. And we also have a fine threesome of European skaters, Jenni Vahamaa, Jenna McCorkell and Elena Glebova.
If you look at the rankings, Kostner should run away with this competition with Rochette a strong second. But giving the inconsistency of all the skaters here, coupled with the new strictness about underrotation and correct edging, this competion sizes up to be a cross between a soap opera and a craps game.
Pass the popcorn and the chips. It's going to be a long weekend
My prayer is that no one feels that this competition was decided by the technical specialist corps.
