Okay, with the last 2 teams to skate, we can safely say that 1-8 is set...

1. ITL Fusar Poli / Margaglio 19.10 19.68 0.00 38.78
2 RUS Navka / Kostomarov 18.52 19.68 0.00 38.20
3 BUL Denkova / Staviski 18.60 19.05 0.00 37.65
4 CAN Dubreuil / Lauzon 18.72 18.72 0.00 37.44
5 UKR Grushina / Goncharov 18.12 19.27 0.00 37.39
6 USA Belbin / Agosto 18.29 19.07 0.00 37.36
7 FRA Delobel / Schoenfelder 17.82 18.62 0.00 36.44
8 LTU Drobiazko / Vanagas 17.13 18.10 0.00 35.23

Going into this, most thought that Navka/Kostomarov would win gold and the race would be for silver and bronze. I, and I think others, thought it would be between Belbin/Agosto, Denkova/Straviski, Grushina/Goncharov and Drobiazko/Vanagas.

I DID NOT think that the Canadian pair or the French pair would play into it...and I CERTAINLY did not think the Italian pair would either.

It's just sooooo close. The OD and FD will be wild.....

Chait/Sak in 13th...man. :) After the last olympics and this whole shebang with her daddy paying folks off etc, they really have never been held up like they use to. Glad to see that has changed.

I am really getting annoyed with people accusing federation, coaches and skaters of paying off judges. Do you have any substantial evidence to back up your accusations??? I would love to see some evidence from Slutskaya21 as well. I think she managed to drag Evan's name through mud on every thread.

Also, it is in really poor taste to express your pleasure at somebody's low placement. For the record, C&S never have been strong in compulsories, they gain points in OD and FD. Additionally, I never felt they were held up with an exeption of their bronze medal at 2002 Worlds. And even still, you could argue it was the team of D&V that was delibiratly being held down as opposed to C&S being held down.

I suspect things will change quiet a bit after OD and CD.

Shocked beyod belief that the Italians are first, and in compulsories, no less! It really does help to skate at home, what can I say!!

It also helps to have Speedy on your side. :)

I can't wait for tonight's telecast to judge for myself. This is a doozy of a competition.

ouch, poor Galit. That's a major bummer. As Ptichka stated, the compulsories are not their strongest but they should be placed in the top 7-8. The fall certainly explains low score and placement. I still expect them to finish ahead of the Kerrs, Wing and Lowe, 2nd Italian pair and Dominina and Shabalin.

As far as Zaretsky team, they just came out of the juniors this season so I think the placement is fair (based on experience). The Hungarians who are former junior champs from a couple of seasons ago are not that far ahaed.

I......To me, the huge 'unknown' -- the 'kicker,' if you will -- is the team of F-P/M...you know, the hometown thing...and the Speedy Factor. My only nightmares have been about F-P/M being placed above the Americans. Awwww...but that just can't happen!!!!!....

I wrote & posted the above two hours ago, at the start of the event.

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I hope the Canadian's could remain in medal reach because they have the most memorable free program out there!

Not happy with the Italians though

I'm just going to have to see this to believe it. The Italian team must be different skaters now!

I can't believe the Italians are in first place. Granted, their cd's were actually the strongest part of the competition for them in SLC, but I can't believe them being placed above all of those teams, especially N&K. I bet N&K are seething. I'm hoping FP&M actually skated well, and that this isn't simply home country bias. I can't post the list of expletitives I hurled at my tv when I saw the scores.

The scortes are close, and the cd is often B&A's lowest scoring section. D&L have placed ahead of them in cds at a few events where B&A eventually took them over. I am happy for D&L though. I really want them to medal.

I just read an article from Yahoo's Olympic news section. Here is what Margaglio said about their performance.

"We are in front, and the others must do better," Margaglio said.

I think they win the gold for confidence.

Go Jamie and Ryan and Sinead and John!

I agree...the Italians...um...are not good dancers. Is it just me or does it look like she drags him around all the time?!

For those of you who haven't been able to watch the CD's yet, I can assure you that the Italian couple definitely did not earn their no. 1 spot fair and square! The result is laughable and Maurizio looked like a heavy bag of cement being dragged about by Barbara! Unbelievable!

Some of you wonder if they have improved from what they used to be - far from it actually, they are WAY below what they used to be and still they're in 1st place...........while there were several very good skates from the other couples, perhaps especially from the Bulgarian couple! The Russian couple was on good form, and the Canadian couple surprisingly good! My favorites D & V didn't have Lady Luck on their side with that draw and the French couple lucked out as well, in spite of a very good waltz.

The mere thought that F-P & M might actually win is nauseating..........yes, I know it's in Turin, Italy, but for God's sake, let the best couple win!!

Even if I was being very open minded and flexable in my thinking, the silver pick still makes me laugh!!!
