France's Emilie Le Pennec, the 2004 Olympic champion on uneven bars, will not try for the world championships because of an inflamed Achilles tendon.
French sports newspaper l'Equipe reported that Le Pennec has been suffering from chronic pain in her right Achilles. Doctors have advised the 18 year old to rest, so as to not risk further injury to the tendon.
Le Pennec finished fifth in the all-around at the 2005 Worlds in Melbourne. She skipped the 2006 European Championships, held in Greece in April, in order to concentrate on her studies.
