Eltamina, Help!!!

Eltamina,

Since you are the classical music guru here, may I ask your opinion/suggestion on something?

My mother offered to treat to go to Amadeus & the ASO, a series of performances of Mozart's works.

I am familiar with a lot of his pieces and operas (but neither of my faves, Symphony 25 and Piano Concerto #3 in G Major are on the list :( ), but am unfamiliar with a couple of the pieces we can opt to see (Please don't think I'm a heathen, )

I wish I could go to all of them, but that's impossible. The choices are (I listed in parentheses the pieces I'm clueless about):

1. Marriage of Figaro (Overture), Clarinet Concerto, and Symphony #40. - (Clarinet Concerto)

2. Don Giovanni (Overture), Piano Concerto #27, K. 595, Symphony #38 (Prague) - (Piano Cto. #27)

3. The Magic Flute (Overture), Concerto for Flute & Harp, Symphony #36 (Linz) - (Symphony #36 Linz)

4. Serenade for Winds, Mass in C Major (Coronation) - (Coronation)

I'm at a loss. What's your take on these groupings?

Thanks.

Number 1! Number 1!

On the other hand, if choice four is the Serenade #11, that might make me pause!

Re: Eltamina, Help!!!

 choice #1 is the one I'm leaning towards.

Mathman, the Serenade for Winds is the "Gran Partita." Does that help?

Thanks for the input. :)

Re: Eltamina, Help!!!

LOL I wish I have your kind of dilemma

Since you are going to attend a symphony orchestra, go for the most symphonic among the 4 then.

#4 Gran partita can be enjoyed in another setting, a chamber music recital, or even watch the movie Armadeus :) Mass in C major can be enjoyed in the setting of a church. Although Mozart's mass in C minor is generally regarded as the best mass he ever composed.

Choice 2 is wonderful because Mozart wrote some of the best piano ctos ever. But if the pianist is not sensitive to playing Mozart, and butchers Mozart with excessive and inappropriate romanticism, then your evening will be ruin

That leaves choice 1 and 3

Mathman here knows how I feel about The Magic Flute, I love it!! Interestingly Mozart actually hated the flute, but he composed a beautiful piece for the flute and harp cto.

You can't go wrong with sym # 40, 38, or 36, but most people regard # 40 and 41 reflect a mature Mozart. The clarinet cto is cosidered as a mature piece of work too. (Besides I really love the sound of the clarinet)

So if you have to choose 1 take #1, but try to talk your mother for 1 and 3

BTW, the music expert at GS is Realtorgal

Ah.. it must be summer, Mostly Mozart programs are sprouting everywhere

Musical regards

eltamina

PS BBC has lectures on Mozart Sym # 40 and clarinet cto here, each lecture is about 45 minutes

Re: Eltamina, Help!!!

Thanks for the info and the link, Elta ;)

After getting your input, I'll see what I can do to work on Mom.

This is my first time going to the ASO since Yoel Levi left, so it will be interesting to hear the symphony since the changing of the guard.

My order of preference would be #2, #1, #3, #4.

Just one Gal's opinion.

Re: Eltamina, Help!!!

For me, it'd be a toss-up between #1 and #2. I love the Clarinet Concerto, but the Prague Symphony is one of my favourites by Mozart...

Too bad indeed that you can't go to all of them. :p

Whichever one you choose though, I'm sure you won't go wrong. :)

Well, We Decided!!!

Well, after taking everyone's comments and opinions and fretting over the decision for several days, Mom and I decided to go to #s 1 and 2. I'll let you know how the concert was - hopefully there will be no butcherings!!!

Many thanks to Mathman, Eltamina, RealtorGal, and GoldenLady1 for their input and expertise!!
