Hi

Does anyone know when this is? Or if there's a website with any info? It's interesting to see some of the young up-coming skaters from china, japan, hong kong, taipei, philippines, india, thailand and some of the non isu member countries like singapore and malaysia.

Thanks

Do you by any chance happen to mean the figure skating event at the Asian GAMES which are in progress now in Doha, Qatar? (I think it's Qatar). I did some checking and while skating is usually an event at the Asian Games, it's not being held at this one. Or is this an entirely new championship that I haven't heard about? (It certainly wouldn't be the first).

In Nov 2005, it was held in Taiwan. I have no idea where it is this year or if it is going to be held at all. If anyone knows, I would be interested in hearing the final results. With so many up and coming Asian skaters, this event is interesting.

Ya, i found that, I don't know if that was the official championships, because, there were no chinese skaters, and I'm pretty sure there are more junior men in asian than that, I also found that each nation could send two skaters in each event, but japan had 3 novice boys, when I translated it, the comp was called Asian Novice and Junior Challenge.......and in 2005, they had senior ladies/men/pairs/dance...as well as junior/novice ladies/men....I hope that they have the competition again

And also, if any one has national championships information for china, japan, mongolia, india, philippines, thailand, malaysia or any other asian countries, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is this an ISU event?

There's a more important Asian Figure Skating Event in late Jan. I will post information when it's become available.

Asian Winter Games are going to be held in China. Obviously, figure skating is an important part. Do you know who actually participated in this event four years ago?

Arakawa, Fumie, and Nakano, the three medalists; also Shen & Zhao! I don't believe Japan will send most of their top athlets this time around, but who knows. If we are lucky, we may see Yu-Na Kim there. China is definitely going to dispatch their top skaters.

More luckily, CCTV5 will have extensive live broadcast. If Japan/China/South Korea indeed send some top skaters, we'll have a TV feast.

I think Dec 28th is the last day to submit final roster. Stay Tuned..

Asian winter games will be held in China this January with all ISU member countries allowed to send 3 reps for each discipline. China and Japan has previously sent their top skaters in the event.

I'm just wondering however other than China I don't think any other asian country has any pair skaters?

Japan has actually had a few national pairs champions over the last 20 years that they never sent anywhere; the Asian Games may have been an exception, but they never showed up at Worlds. (The most recent in this category was a brother and sister team that I think won the Japanese National Pairs title in like 98 and 99; can't recall their names and not even sure now how I heard about them.)

Taipei has a Junior pair, Amanda and Daryll Yang.

India sent a pair to the JGP Taipei event that finished dead last and managed to rack up on 4.30 points for both programs combined. Further discussion of them can be found in the JGP Taipei Folder under Junior Grand Prix Events.

Also, Uzbekistan is, I believe, considered to be an Asian country, as is Kazakstan. They probably have a pair or two available to send; Uzbekistan at least usually does.

I remember from the event a few years ago that PRK Korea sent 3 teams, so a few asian countries do have pairs, but they never really compete on ISU circuits or Worlds

Oh, yeah, forgot about North Korea (which is pretty easy to do). They only pop up at the Olys on occasion (Torino and also Albertville) and any qualifying competition they need to get there. I suspect it's a question of finances; the North Korean federation probably has no money whatsoever and the IOC pays a lot of the tab for "developing nations" to travel to the Olys; Worlds, they're more or less on their own from that standpoint. I don't know how it works with the Asian Games. I would imagine they would be motivated to compete there, as a variation of "Look what our athletes can do under our system", like with East Germany and USSR in the Cold War days. Based on the results of competitions that North Korea actually does compete in, they certainly seem to have a fair amount of at least middling talent. (And has anyone else noticed how well the SOUTH Korean junior ladies have done this season?). At the 2005 Karl Schaefer (the qualifier for Torino), North Korea was 4th out of 21 in Men's, 2nd out of 23 in Ladies, and 8th out of 12 in Pairs, in all cases beating a lot of skaters from more "established" countries who had a lot more international experience.
I suspect that they may have done at least a little better in Torino (I think they were last in all categories, or 2nd to last at best) if they themselves had more international experience; it's really hard to go to the Olympics and skate well when you only get let out of your own country to skate once every 5 years or so; I should imagine it was a very overwhelming experience for them to be there, even more so than for other skaters who had never been to an Olys before.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Which is actually kind of odd, given the difference in governments; you wouldn't think North would be open to the idea. I wonder if S Korea paid for N Korea to go to the Karl Schaefer to qualify??

Kazakstan, Uzbekistan and other former Soviet Union nations can send in their pair teams. Actually Uzbekstan(?) did pretty well last time, they won a medal.

Regarding North Korea. They did have a fairly excellent skater-KIM Yong Suk. She only lost to three top Japanese female skaters at last Asian Winter Games(won over chinese skaters such as Dan Fang). She was horribly undermarked at Olys SP. Here is a video link of her on youtube.
Her Lutz is monstrous. Watch it:

I do believe China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and some former Soviet Union countries will send in some excellent athlets. I heard from a Chinese board Pang & Tong are definitely going to this event. Hopefully Yu-Na will also participate. It's actually quite exciting since CCTV5 will have extensive live coverage and we can all watch online.

I will create a thread when more information is available.

I'm actually quite interested in seeing how well can new ISU member countries like Thailand, Philippines, etc hold up. I hope they send local skaters not imported ones!

I think the Thai federation, at very least, relies on a lot of "imports"; I remember when they first joined the ISU in 99 or thereabouts, they were actively looking and recruiting American skaters with Thai parents to comprise their team; they even put 'want ads' in some of the skating magazines.

I don't think this was the case at Torino (or in any other previous winter Olympics that I can remember) but there might be a possibility of creating a unified team in the future.

It is confirmed that Yu-Na Kim is expected to compete in Asian Games. It's was stated in an article which I can't seem to find right now. Also all 3 top Chinese Pairs team are also expected to compete considering it is in their home country
