The Art of Piano
A documentary on the great concert pianists of the 20th century was on PBS Sunday, March 9th. Whether you are a serious music lover or just like it as background for skating , I highly recommend this show (check www.pbs.org for rebroadcast times). The documentary highlights the master artists of the piano, well-known, lesser known, and virtually obscure. Of course it is wonderful to see film of Vladimir Horowitz, Glenn Gould, and Claudio Arrau in their prime, I was just as fascinated by the pianists I'd never heard of. Fascinating personalities, great discussion on what it is to be a great interpretive artist, rare concert footage (Glenn Gould on stage!) and glorious music--I really loved this.
