VIOLINIST SARAH CHANG AND PIANIST LARS VOGT IN DUO RECITAL AS PART OF GREAT PERFORMERS’ “VIRTUOSO RECITAL” SERIES
ON SUNDAY, MARCH 16 AT 3 PM IN AVERY FISHER HALL

Program of sonatas by Ravel, Saint-Saëns, and Franck

Great Performers presents violinist Sarah Chang and pianist Lars Vogt’s New York performance on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at 3 p.m. in Avery Fisher Hall as part of its “Virtuoso Recitals” series. The program, which will feature the two in duo recital, will include Ravel’s Sonata, Saint-Saëns’s Violin Sonata No.1 in D minor, and Franck’s Sonate in A major.

The New York Times has described Mr. Vogt’s playing as “magnificent in its contrapuntal energy.” The Orange County Register described Ms. Chang’s most recent performance in Los Angeles by saying, “her musical focus was unswerving. She honed in on every phrase, and gave it the maximum expression.”

Tickets are $55, $45, and $32, and are available at the Avery Fisher Hall box office, through CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, or by visiting Lincoln Center’s web site at www.lincolncenter.org, now with instant ticketing.

In addition to her North American and European tour dates with Mr. Vogt, highlights of violinist Sarah Chang’s 2002-03 season include an appearance with the London Symphony for Sir Colin Davis’ 75th birthday, a gala concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as it bids farewell to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the opening of the new Esplanade Center in Singapore with Maestro Masur, the London Philharmonic, and the Singapore Symphony. While in Singapore, Ms. Chang will also conduct a workshop for young violinists. In recent seasons, Ms. Chang has appeared with the Orchestre National de France, the Houston Symphony, the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, and Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra. Her notable recital engagements have included Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Symphony Hall in Boston, the Barbican Centre in London, the Philharmonie in Berlin, as well as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As a chamber musician, Ms. Chang has collaborated with such artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yefim Bronfman, Martha Argerich, Leif Ove Andsnes, Stephen Kovacevich, Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, and the late Isaac Stern.

She has reached an even wider audience through her many television appearances, concert broadcasts, and best-selling recordings for EMI Classics. The remarkable accomplishments of her career were recognized in 1999 when she received the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards given to instrumentalists. Her latest releases are “Fire and Ice,” an album of popular shorter works for violin and orchestra with Placido Domingo conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, and a disc of chamber music for strings: Dvořák’s Sextet and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence with current and former members of the Berlin Philharmonic. Scheduled for release this spring is the Dvořák Violin Concerto with the London Symphony and Sir Colin Davis, along with the Dvořák Piano Quintet with Leif Ove Andsnes, Alex Kerr, Georg Faust and Wolfram Christ.

Pianist Lars Vogt’s 2002–03 concert season includes concerto appearances with the Baltimore and Cincinnati Symphonies and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Abroad, Mr. Vogt appears with the Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle, the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, among others. He also brings a program from his chamber music festival in Heimbach, Germany, to London’s Wigmore Hall. Next season he returns to Great Performers along with violinist Christin Tetzlaff for two recitals of works by Bartók and Janáček.

Born in the German town of Düren, Mr. Vogt first came to international attention by winning second prize at the 1990 Leeds International Competition. Since then, he has pursued an active career that comprises major concerto and recital performances throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Mr. Vogt has recorded nine discs for EMI including the Schumann and Grieg concertos and the first two Beethoven concertos with the City of Birmingham Symphony and Sir Simon Rattle, who described him as “one of the most extraordinary musicians of any age group that I have had the fortune to be associated with.” His most recent releases are Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 2 with the Berlin Philharmonic and Claudio Abbado and a solo disc with
Brahms’ Piano Sonata Op. 5 and Ballades Op. 10.

In February 2002, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and its new music director, Donald Runnicles, to critical acclaim. He has developed a close relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic that has included regular subscription concerts, two Hollywood Bowl appearances with Sir Simon Rattle, and a recent program on its recital series. He has also given recitals in Vancouver, Toronto, and Chicago (both at Symphony Hall and Ravinia). Mr. Vogt has made successful debuts with the Cleveland and Minnesota Orchestras, and the Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Montreal, Saint Louis, San Francisco, and Toronto symphonies. He has also made return appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival. On August 21 he returns with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

Mr. Vogt works regularly with the Philharmonia, the London Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Bournemouth Symphony, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and all of the BBC orchestras (including appearances at the BBC Proms). He has also given many recitals on the International Piano Series at Queen Elizabeth Hall, at Wigmore Hall, and for BBC Radio 3. Mr. Vogt also performs widely in Germany, maintaining close relationships with both symphony orchestras in his home city of Cologne, the Gürzenich Orchestra, and the Cologne Radio Symphony. In 1997, he completed a Beethoven cycle with the Gürzenich Orchestra under its music director, James Conlon. He has also worked with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and the Bamberg Symphony orchestras. Recital engagements have taken him to London, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, and the festivals of Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein, and Ruhr. Mr. Vogt’s chamber music collaborations have included Marie Luise Neunecker, Christian Tetzlaff, Sabine Meyer, Heinrich Schiff, and Truls Mørk. He also collaborates with the actor Klaus-Maria Brandauer in a program based on Doctor Faustus. The summer of 1998 marked the opening of the annual chamber music festival in Heimbach, Germany, founded by Mr. Vogt.
