so far all is well here in southern Maine

hope we don't get hammered like the rest have been! All the same it can't be worse than the Ice Storm of '98 where my family was without power for 3 weeks and my Dad ran himself ragged running a little generator to keep the furnace and a few lights going. We had to turn off everything but the furnace so I could watch Nationals and Michelle's transcendant performances there!

Well, it looks like this:

For people on the East Coast it looks like that:

Storm of the Century

Hope you're all managing to keep warm :)

A couple of weeks ago here in UK we had maybe one centimetre of snow and the entire country ground to a halt. People were stuck on one ill-fated stretch of freeway from 4pm-12pm next day. It never ceases to amaze me how ill-prepared we always seem to be over here, and I can't see why such a tiny quantity of snow has such catastrophic effects anyway ...

Thinking of you all,
Liliya

So far in my area we got more snow before Christmas

Good as I don't want to be shoveling for hours again! The biggest problem with having lots of snow this winter is so many snowmobile riders getting killed from going to fast, running into stuff or in one case running over a man and killing him :-( If this keeps up the state might make a law requiring a permit for snowmobile drivers and see if they can't train some of these stupid deadly mistakes out of the drivers.

We've had a record amount of snow in Boston. It's awful, but quite exciting at the same time. Skiing should be the best in the next few weeks (I went this week, and it was already one of the best skiing conditions I have ever seen).

BTW, a little trivia about measuring snowfall. Some of you may have been surprised by balerinagirl's post about the country being so affected by 1 cm of snow, whereas we have had more than 20" on the East Coast! Actually, in Europe they measure snowfall in terms of how much it would have been had it been rain. If you think about it, it makes a lot more sense: the way we do it here in the states, you get dramatically different figures with the same amount of snow depending on whether it's light and fluffy, or heavy and wet!

I lived in Boston for the blizzard of '77. School was closed for three weeks (yay!), no cars on the road for the first week or so, everyone helping each other with food shopping, clearing driveways, etc. It was kind of surreal, but as a high schooler, 3 weeks off was fantastic! (We had to go to school 20 minutes early for the rest of the year--big deal...)

It's been a while since we had such a huge snowfall from one storm. It's pretty hazardous since it's hard to see those HUGE piles of snow when turning into traffic.

Thank God my neighbor came over with his snowblower 3 times. Otherwise, I'd still be digging out.

I lived in Ohio for the Blizzards of 76 and 77. Then, I hitched out to California in Sept. of 78. I haven't seen snow since. Sometimes I think it might be nice for a day or two. However, I still remember how much I hated it. I also, have fond memories of listening to the radio for schools closing. They would say also closed will St. Thomas Aquinas Grammer. Then, we would go crazy. We would get our sleds out and go sledding or better yet, we would get our skates and walk over to Hecklinger's pond and skate. My partner Kevin, has never seen snow fall in his life. He did go into the mountains years ago for a day. So he has seen snow. He just says he can't even imagine.

It's been 7 years since we got a decent snow in NYC, and we expect it all to be slush tomorrow.
