By Seattle Times news services

CHICOUTIMI, Quebec — Apolo Ohno of Seattle finished second to China's Li Jiajun in the 1,500-meter final yesterday, the first day of a three-day World Cup short-track speedskating competition.

Ohno's time was 2 minutes, 27.228 seconds, compared with 2:27.204 for Li.

"We're disappointed that Apolo didn't win, but we're happy with second place," U.S. Coach Stephen Gough said.

Ohno won his two 1,500 heats to advance to the final. He earned the Olympic gold medal in the 1,500 last year.

Fu Tianyu of China won the women's race in 2:48.224.

• Italy's Sonja Steinacher won the women's season title, and Pawel Porschnev and Ivan Lazarev of Russia took the doubles championship in the final round of the luge World Cup in Valdaora, Italy. The meet ends today with the men's singles event, featuring a battle between Austrians Robert Batkowski and Gerhard Pilz.

Sorry to "spoil" your enthusisam, but what has speed skating got to do with figure skating? Shouldn't this be in the "Off Topics" file?

I'd like to put Speedy in the OFF files.

Maybe we can get Anton to switch to figure skating. I bet he'd be in the Olys by 2006.
