Figure skating championships spread over 9 days, 2 weekends in 2010

The United States Figure Skating Championships will make a historic schedule change for 2010, the Tribune has learned.
U.S. Figure Skating executive director David Raith confirmed Friday morning the senior competition will be spread over nine days and two weekends rather than the five days and one weekend under the current schedule. Raith said the change would give the championships greater television exposure a month before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Raith said NBC, the USFS's broadcast partner through 2010, favored such a schedule and that discussions about it have taken place with the half-dozen cities that have expressed interest in hosting the event. Bids are due by March 15; the host city will be selected at the USFS annual meeting in May.
The 2010 U.S. Championships will essentially replicate the schedule skaters will follow at the Olympics a month later, except all Olympic events are at night.
The 2010 U.S. pairs and men's events will take place from Jan. 15-17 (Friday-Sunday). The dance and women's events will run from Jan. 20-23 (Wednesday-Saturday).
Raith said the entire footprint of the event, which includes novice and junior competitions, would be only two days longer than it has been. The championships would revert to their traditional schedule in non-Olympic years.
The 2010 U.S. schedule, as it stands now:
Jan. 15: pairs short program (afternoon) and men short program (night).
Jan. 16: pairs free skate final (afternoon).
Jan. 17, men free skate final (afternoon).
Jan. 20, dance compulsories (night).
Jan. 21, women's short program (night).
Jan. 22, original dance (night).
Jan. 23, dance free skate (afternoon), women free skate (night).
