The terrible accident along a highway in Maryland that involved spectators and participants in an apparently makeshift dragstrip activity in "early morning darkness" is indeed a horrid tragedy, but it should never have happened.
The news column I just read about the accident is a long one - yet nowhere is there any mention of the fact that, unless I'm missing something here, the activity that was taking place on this lonely, unlighted stretch of highway is ILLEGAL - repeat, ILLEGAL. Period!!
NOWHERE in the United States is it LEGAL to set up a makeshift dragstrip along a public highway - in fact, you can't even set up an "instant dragrace " with nobody watching at all! Of course, you'll probably be able to pull it off in many cases without being noticed by the law, especially at night.
The point is, they CAN NOT hold any driver who came along and hit these people responsible for the terrible deaths that occurred - CAN THEY?
You people who think illegal dragracing is innocent fun - wake up!!
