LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (AP) - Tonya Harding won her home- state boxing debut on a unanimous decision Friday night.

The self-titled ``America's Bad Girl'' entered the ring to a chorus of boos from the crowd of about 1,800 at Chinook Winds Casino, but left to mostly cheers after an easy victory.

Dressed in black and flanked by an entourage of six, the disgraced former U.S. figure skating champion (3-1) looked overweight and was clearly winded by the end of the first of four rounds against Emily Gosa.

The entire fight barely elevated itself above a drunken street brawl, with both boxers running to the center of the ring at the fight's start and stumbling through the first few seconds after colliding.

Gosa, making her professional debut, looked better suited to be a ring-card girl than a boxer, and fell down early in the fight. Harding also stumbled to one knee, but neither was credited with a knockdown, and that's as close as either fighter came to hitting the mat.

Harding had decidedly more power than Gosa, snapping the younger woman's head back on several occasions and drawing blood from her right nostril in the second round.

Gosa, from Sulligent, Ala., got in some decent punches of her own, but none of the shots had the power to faze Harding.

As Harding left the ring - again protected by her phalanx of bodyguards, trainers and hangers-on - she was taunted by several fans, one who suggested she bring her hubcap next time, a reference to a domestic dispute in which Harding attacked her then-boyfriend with a hubcap.

Harding's skating career ended in 1994 after she was linked to an assault plot to keep rival Nancy Kerrigan out of the Olympics. The plot failed, even though Kerrigan was clubbed on a knee. Harding acknowledged hindering the attack investigation.

I can't understand why she wants to do this kind of thing ... other than the money, of course.
If I were her, I think I would just want to try and lead a private and productive life somewhere ... away from all this.
What a shame how her life turned out. Such a waste of God given talent.

I feel the same, nymkfan........maybe she should write a book? It seems to work for Hillary Clinton, and I'm sure Tonya's story will be just as interesting...anyway, it's gotta be easier than being punched about.....42

In spite of all the really stupid things this womn has done in her life, there is a part of me that does feel sorry for her.

She had termendous athletic capabilities and today could be celebrating as the first woman to do a quad, rather than having her remaining brain capacity beaten to a pulp.

Re: Tonya Harding wins first bout in Oregon

Tonya spent years of training to become a figure skater. That was taken from her as well as coaching or any other way to make a living doing what she loved and doing the only thing she knew how to do.

Granted what she did to Nancy was terrible but Nancy has moved on, figure skating got a big shot in the arm and Tonya is still floundering around try to find a way to survive the best she can. When she should have been getting an education she was at the ice rink. Skating has given so many judges a second chance but they made an example of Tonya.

I hate to see her end up this way. :(

I hope this Boxing thing makes her happy. This seems to be the only way she can earn a living. She chose her path in life and will not be forgotten for her past. How sad.

Why doesn't the kid take up hockey instead? At least she would still be on the ice. She probably would make a good goalie.

You know Ladskater, you just may have something there. I never thought of Hockey for Tonya but you are right. I bet she would be very good or is she getting too old for that now.

Oh, boy!! I could just see Tonya taking up ice hockey. Can you imagine the media circus that would ensue if Tonya got into fights on the ice - punching her opponents, pulling their hair, etc.? It would be yet another chance for the press to have a field day at her expense. Of course, Tonya has not exactly helped her own cause, either - not by a longshot.

In boxing, you fight someone in the same weight class as you, correct?

In hockey, I'm afraid that Tonya Harding is far too petite. She's feisty and, apparently, strong for her size, but the average female hockey player has at least double the shoe size as the former figure skater.

True, but Tonya would sure put up a fight if she competed in ice hockey. I wouldn't want to be on the other end of the hockey stick with her.

On the other hand, she's 32 years old now -- probably too old to seriously take up ice hockey as anything other than a recreational sport.

ITA. I don't think the punishment fit the crime in this case.

Well woop-de-doo....

She has only herself to blame for the mess she made of her life.It wasn't just being with the wrong crowd(Gilooly,et.al.),she was on the cusp of a comeback when she blew it by throwing that hubcap at her boyfriend, ending up in the slammer.Do I need to mention that other screw-ups she committed since?

I'm afraid Tonya Harding is the poster girl for what can happen to you if you repeatedly make terrible mistakes of judgement and refuse to accept responsibility for your behavior. At some point, you just have to grow up and get on with your life. I seriously wonder if Tonya will ever really achieve maturity. She's always going to blame her ex-husband, former friends, parents, and others in her life for the rotten things that have happened to her and which may continue to happen to her. Yikes....:(
