Right, several things with Nationals placings and scores being the most important, went into the evaluation of Kristine's talent. Angela placed 3rd in her 1st assignment last year but got a low score (she had 4 falls) which must have played a part in her not getting a 2nd assignment.

The rule that US Figure Skating applies is that if you finish in the top 4 in a JGP event, you are eligible for a second assignment EXCEPT in cases where the JGP event is in the US and you are the third place American (as Maxwell was at LP last season - US swept the podium in Placid).

I don't think Angela Maxwell's Lake Placid score----120.26---is that low considering that it was the first competition of the season, she was just up from Novice, and was performing her new programs for the first time. This season, Sarah Hecken won a bronze medal at Merano with 118.65, and Min Jung Kwak won bronze in Mexico with 117.42. Marks tend to be lower in the earlier competitions and often get higher in later ones.

Angela scored 152.16 at Mids Sectionals, and 150.11 at Nationals, so her marks went way up as the season went on. Even with National inflation factor, that is a big improvement.
