OK, so I am watching the 1950 movie "Cheaper by the Dozen," set at the turn of the twentieth century. One of the characters is setting out for the big dance and he tells his girl friend, "Hey, baby, let's go shake that thing!"

I thought that was some kind of modern hip hop phrase that we just recently came up with. (Mrs. MM just leaned in to say, poor dear, people have been shaking their thing since Adam and Eve.) Anyway, I looked it up and this is the name of a 1925 blues song by Papa Charlie Johnson (later covered by Mother McCree and her Uptown Jug Band). So there ya go.

So then they start doing a dance called the Toddle. And now I know why they call Chicago "that toddlin' town" -- jumping to this particular jive dance. (Evidently there was also a similar dance in the 1920s called the Chicago -- but, "♫ ♪ Chicago, Chicago, that Chicagoing town! ♫ ♪ ," didn't have the same ring. :)
