The real Skate America competition is just about to begin. And this is the last of my Skate America previews. I will be trying to do at least the Ice Dance preview for all the Grand Prix events. If I have time, I'll do all 4 event previews, but I've got to say it was quite a stretch to get them all done before the competition began.

Although there are only eight pairs in this competition, expect the level of competition to be very, very high. How could it be anything else when the World Champions are here competing?

I just hope all the pairs skate well here, and finish up without serious accidents and injuries.

Anyway, buy a hot dog and a cup of cocoa for me, and let's watch!

1 Meagan DUHAMEL / Craig BUNTIN CAN 1
Pairs so often is about reshaping your dreams. So many pair skaters were single skaters who didn't quite make the jump from the national to the international stage at the Senior level. Megan's career is somewhat like that. As a result, her jumps are strong. And so many partnerships dissolve due to age, growth of one partner, or injuries. Partnerships form and reform. Craig had had a lot of success with former partner Valerie Marcoux, but when she retired, he didn't see his dream as ended, either. They are the Canadian national bronze medallists.
And in their first World Championships together last season, they finished sixth, and thus appear here as a seeded team.

2 Yue ZHANG / Lei WANG CHN 2

It's obvious that the Chinese Federation is very serious about this young pair.
They are skating both the Jr and Sr Grand Prix circuit. They just qualified for the
JGPF. And Bin Yao is now coaching them. It doesn't get any more serious than that.
Would't it be a kick if they qualified for the GPF as well? Now that the events are
joined, I wonder if they would have to skate two events per day? I really like their Sea Chanteys SP, as skated at the Chinese Champions Cup last spring. They won that competition, their first win at the National level. I wish them every good luck in maintaining the excellence of the Chinese pairs program.

4 Aliona SAVCHENKO / Robin SZOLKOWY GER 4
Aliona and Robin are the World Champions, but more importantly they are one of the few teams that have managed to put in a real performance within the limitation of the COP rules. Their Bollywood SP from the 2007/2008 season was particularly special. We are very, very lucky to have them at Skate America.

6 Rena INOUE / John BALDWIN USA 6

I don't know when Rena and John had time to put together programs for this year. Here's the September and October schedule alone. It looks like they had maybe 2 weeks to do it. They feel they achieved all their goals in 2006 and are continuing to compete because they love it and because they can.
I don't expect them to do well here because of the lack of preparation time. Plus recent changes in the rules don't favor them either. Their weaknesses are the SBS jumps. Their strengths are gorgeous side by side spins and step and spiral sequences. And every once in a while they will land a throw triple axel.

They've only been skating together for about a year. Last year they were 6th at US Nationals. They have side by side triple salchows in their arsenal of tricks. They are one more of the pairs coming out of the Broadmoor program, which they do wonderful twists and change partners very often. Caitlin is John's third partner. I hope third time's the charm.
