This is an interesting competition. We get to compare the skating of Patrick Chan and Takahiko Kozuka, both skaters of intricate programs who score well even when the jumps are not there.

And then we get to see how the judges compare those skaters with the high flying French quadmeisters, Joubert and Preaubert. Not to mention, Ryan Bradley, the silver medallist at Skate Canada, landed some pretty snifty quads there, too. Also Andrei Lutai, the Russian men's silver medallist, also has a quad. And Yoann Deslot of France sometimes has one, too, but sometimes he forgets where he put it.

If you like smooth edges, Chan and Kozuka are the skaters for you.

If you like comedy and humor, definitely don't miss Preaubert and Bradley.

And if you like the beautifully executed jumps, provided his magic blade sharpener is working, there is no better skater since Plushenko retired that Brian Joubert. His pattern seem to be that he struggles in the fall, but gets things together by Worlds and Europeans. I'm hoping that being beaten by Preaubert at Masters de Patinage will have accelerated his training schedule a bit. I love those high flying jumps myself.

So definitely don't miss this competition folks! It will be a corker for sure.

Now I don't know what rink food you should buy at a French rink. Once my husband somehow ended up with a hamburger with an egg on it at one.

But here in the states, I'm thinking of some crispy French fries with gravy on them, and a hot dog with finely chopped cabbage slaw and a mild mustard.

However, I'm going to settle with a nice cup of hot chocolate if only icenetwork will manage to let me watch without it freezing up.

1 Patrick CHAN CAN 1

Patrick is reworking his triple axel and trying to get his quad consistent. He is such a lovely skater that it's easy to forget how very, very young he is (as well as amazingly talented. He is here, fresh from his win at Skate Canada.

2 Jialiang WU CHN 2

Silver Medallist Chinese Nationals 2007/2008 season
He is a relative youngster of 23. The Chinese are getting serious about their men's program. When they pay to send skaters to David Wilson in Canada, you know they are serious. I hope Wu will skate better here than he did in Cup of China recently. I want to be able to appreciate that Wilson choreography a little more.

3 Yoann DESLOT FRA 3

I don't know much about Yoann. But his 4th place finish at Masters de Patinage is an important jump in position for him, and will be why the French federation added his name to the list of competitors at TEBC. However, his eight place finish at Coupe de Nice (the medallists there were Preaubert, Ponsero, and Macypura) indicates he still has some consistency problems.

Coaches: Annick Dumont et Pierre Trente
Training towns: Yoann a débuté au Club de Grenoble et s'entraîne maintenant au pôle de Champigny.

4 Brian JOUBERT FRA 3

The ex world champion, and current world silver medallist is going to want to skate his best here. It's his Grand Prix debut in the year leading up to the Olympics, an Olympics that I'm sure he has felt that he will surely win a medal in. His sixth place in the last Olympics had to be a huge disappointment that he will want to wipe out with a 2010 podium finish.

On the other hand, he keeps a very busy schedule. Not only does he skate in many shows, he models and pictures of him in various states of dress and undress are all over the internet. All this activity has got to affect his training schedule, I would think.

He also feels a need to give explanations and complain about the scoring system when he loses. I'm hoping he skates well this competition, because when he skates well, he's amazing.

Coach: Jean-Christophe Simond Former Coach: A. Berezintsev, V. Guyon, L. Depouilly
Choreographer: Evgeni Platov (Thanks Nmsis!)

5 Alban PREAUBERT FRA 3

Alban, like Ryan Bradley, is just fun to watch. His SP routine as a bee trying to avoid flies is a fond memory of mine from Skate America 2006. That routine is not on youtube, but still can be seen on icenetwork as part of the Skate America Day 1 coverage 2006 as part of the archived footage. If you have a subscription, be sure to go back and check it out.

Throw Alban a teddy bear for me, will you, if you're at the event? I love his skating!

6 Peter LIEBERS GER 4

He is 20.

He took almost a year recovering from a broken leg. A metal insert was put in it that was able to be removed a year later. Only then could he resume training full out. His quad toe is not yet consistent, but he was training it back in June. He has a 3A3T combo in his LP. His performance at Coupe de Nice was significantly better than what he has shown at his last Europeans and at Finlandia, earlier in the fall.

I want to see what Rene Lohse has choreographed for him, too, and see it skated well.

8 Andrei LUTAI RUS 6

Andrei Lutai was added to TEBC at the last minute. As a result, he is not competing at Golden Spin of Zagreb this weekend. He is coached by Mishin, but Tom Dickson of the Broadmoor in Colorado does his vhoreography. I think that's an interesting combination. He is the two time Russian silver medallist and he did a 4t2t at Russian nationals.

9 Igor MACYPURA SVK 7

Igor struggles a bit with his jumps, but has a 3A and a 3F3T in his SP. He tends to fall apart a bit in the LP. His step sequences are only level one, so he leaves a lot of points on the table there. He used to skate for the US, but like many with dual citizenship, has chosen to skate for another country, in this case Slovakia. He has changed coaches to from Delilah Sappenfield to Christine Binder and is now training at Artesia, CA (Kwan rink) Michelle's sister Karen is his choreographer. He skated very well at Coupe de Nice and then went on to skate not so well at Skate America. Perhaps his schedule was affected by the move and the coaching change.

I'm hoping it's the Good Igor that shows up here.

11 Ryan BRADLEY USA 9
The high kick waxel thing in his program is intentional. His exhibitions are always amazing. He is a total ham. There is more life in his exhibitions than in his competitive programs. His jumps are huge. He has great spirals and musicality. His basic skating probably needs work. He learned to skate at age 2 and perhaps that's a problem? Also, he's a college student, majoring in business. His last competition, Skate Canada, yield him his best ever scores in SP, LP, and total and his first ever Grand Prix medal (silver in this case). Plus he landed two quads, one in the SP and one in the LP.

"A lackluster 2007-08 season hampered by inconsistent performances and nagging knee injuries opened the door to retirement for Bradley, the Broadmoor Skating Club's most decorated active member. Bradley took fifth at the U.S. Championships following a fifth- place finish at Trophee Eric Bompard and a sixth-place showing at Skate America. And his surgically repaired knees continued to give him trouble. "It was hard for me at the end of last season," Bradley said. "I was so tired, and I was on the road so much. It was really wearing on me." The prospect of revamped programs lit a fire in Bradley as his coaches, Tom Zakrajsek and Becky Calvin, attempted to persuade him not to call it quits.

They worked together to develop what Bradley termed "lighter" routines aimed at pleasing the audience. To keep the technical elements at a high standard, they incorporated a quad toe loop, a jump with four rotations. "You have to be competitive, but we want something the crowd can enjoy,"

Bradley said. "My favorite part of competing is entertaining the crowd and getting that roar. We're ending the programs to bring out my character a little bit more."

12 Brandon MROZ USA 9
Brandon is still 17. (His birthday is in December) I first remember seeing Brandon skate at Liberty one year. He had just won juniors, and then decided to skate in the Senior Men's short. He won that too. Lately, that consistency has eroded, because he is growing. He has a penchant for ornate costumes. Brandon had his best ever total score and SP at Skate Canada this year. His programs are getting better all the time.
His costume for Till Eulenspiegel is a little peculiar. It's hard to picture Till, who seemed to specialize in the sort of pranks that involved cow manure, dressed in a vest with a lace jabot and a watch chain. Till is supposed to be a sly and humorous peasant playing tricks on the rich and the obnoxious.

Deslot's SP music is Le Concerto de l'Adieu, soundtrack of the movie Dien Bien Phu, by Georges Delerue.

And Joubert's choreographer is currently Evgeni Platov.

Thanks for the job of gathering all those informations, Doris.

Nmsis, Thanks for the info! I have updated (with thanks to you in parantheses).

Do you know any details about Deslot? There wasn't much biographical fluff or interviews that I found. Only a section from the Grenoble News that was the usual such a prodigy, such jumps when he was 9 sort of stuff.

Not much.
Deslot is a skater who has style but is rather fragile mentally, a thing that has always prevented him to "shine".
He has good spins and flexibility that he kept from his young age when he was doing rhytmic gymnastics.
He's really sweet and likes to talk with the fans so even if he doesn't make the podiums, he has a very faithful little fan club.
