The New York Times published a front-page article on the Zamboni today: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/23/sports/hockey/23zamboni.html
And, in this day, it may be comforting to know that Frank J. Zamboni & Company, still family owned and operated, is not asking for a government bailout.

“Not yet,” Richard F. Zamboni, 76, the company president and son of the founder, said with an easy smile. “We go in cycles that don’t really go with the economy.”

In almost every way, Zamboni is a revered model of consistency. Its form, function and sales output — 200 to 250 of its all-in-one machines are produced each year, the company said — have barely changed in decades.

Here's a Zamboni slideshow photo gallery that goes with the article:

The caption states the first Zamboni was made in 1949. What did they use before that?

That's a good question? Alot of events, including Olympics used to take place outdoors. I grew up with a pond in my backyard and we used to squirt it down with the hose now and then to smooth it out.

Zambonis are serious business ... I dreamt last night I rode a zamboni out of the rink and I ran over Rick Astley... I awake in tears ... the one final rick-roll ....
