Oh yes, I'd love to see that. Some people don't like the folk/country theme for this season's OD, but I appreciated it in the sense that a lot of cultures got presented in a skating format. (Of course some of them were hit-and-miss, but that's already been discussed to death.:D ) I'm still waiting for Yu-Na and Mao to do something like Lu Chen did.

I would love it if both girls skated something ethically inspired! Mao really is perfect for it; her excellent carriage and posture would lend that sense of a quiet, subtle, princess-like grace and elegance. Add to that her lovely, floating style... she could be like a sakura blossom just dancing in the wind.

As for Yu-na, I know one piece of music I'd love for her to skate to; Arirang. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-OUt3IFlzk Beautiful; and in a way, it really does tell Yu-na's story. Like when the music rises, I think of a flower blossoming, which could be the story told here. There's something very organice in Yu-na's skating, and yet she floats at the same time, which is why I think she could carry this perfectly.

I love Libertango. I don't know who I'd best like to see skating to it, but I'd love to see it performed someday. Ideally it should be performed by a couple, but with all the rules and regulations for moves, I fear that pigs will fly before that happens. It needs to be someone with fast feet, who can summon up ferocity. That's kind of hard in the crowd of little high-voiced girlis that we have currently. Of today's skaters, maybe Joannie has it in her. Ooh--or Suzuki! Of the men, Daisuke, of course.

Mao--I know someone suggested something from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique for her. I'll add to that by suggesting some other Berlioz: how about the Queen Mab Scherzo from his Romeo et Juliette? It's got her quicksilver lightness, though the choregrapher would have to think creatively to get her to find some longer glides under the rapid rhythm for at least part of it. Then there's The Royal Hunt and Storm from his opera Les Troyens, which would have to be excerpted (I'm thinking it would start at around 2:50 at the earliest) as it's so long. But it's rich and dramatic without the heaviness of that Rachmaninoff she insisted on using this season. (Why that Rachmaninoff? She had his three symphonies, four piano concertos, and possibly the most beautiful cello sonata ever written, and she picked that dirge.)

I really want Caroline to branch out and skate to something more upbeat, perhaps Edwin Martin's Gypsy Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRoUNU2RJnk&feature=related . It would be a challenge but might help her skate faster and work on her choreography.

After seeing her take on Zegwinsden last season I am not too keen on her trying to keep up with fast music. I thought a fast gypsy-like dance would help but the speed of the music (combined with the terrible cuts) only made her look worse. She need mid temp music that plays to her strengths of flexibility and lightness on the ice. Love in the time of Cholera clip was very pretty, but too slow for Miriai who should be showing off her great speed. It might make a good pick for Caroline. I also would like to see Caroline take the Pearl Fishers (Pang and Tong's SP). Rach's Vocalise would be a very good, but rather "safe" choice. Whatever she skates to she has to REALLY work on her performance level and selling the choreography no matter how poorly she lands the jumps.

I completely agree! Joe Hisaishi is an absolute gem. When I watch Studio Ghibli films, I always appreciate three things: the superb animation, the great story, and the wonderful music.

Agreed! It's so beautiful, and already has no lyrics, why not use it?!

Reposting these, because we're on a Hisaishi roll:

One Summer's Day, from Spirited Away
Summer from Kikujiro
Howl's Moving Castle Theme

Ren, I think a Chinese skater used Princess Mononoke recently, but don't quote me on that.

If we're talking musicals, I want skaters to use an instrumental version from Wicked or Spring Awakening (I'm thinking Touch Me or The Guilty Ones, which are so emotional and beautiful, though there are faster songs). And like I said - use Nightmare Before Christmas, and gain my eternal love. There's an instrumental medley in the soundtrack already!

Hasn't Akiko skated to this music already? As an exhibition piece.

I'm vaguely aware that someone other than Lu Chen has used Hisaishi/Ghibli music, but I don't know who, either. :) And I can't believe I forgot Dragon Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4E566UwU5Q) and Reprise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkSnCMPhaRY) from Spirited Away! The music from Howl's Moving Castle makes me think of waltzing. :D (Ok, now I suddenly have this strange image of Daisuke in my head, skating as Howl...)

As for musicals, I'm always up for more skaters using pieces from musicals! Some pieces I prefer:
Sunset Boulevard, Too Much In Love To Care: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_tpc2CwZ1c
Aida, Every Story is a Love Story, Fortune Favors the Brave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O4zH6f0BBY ; Dance of the Robe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JII5BrnfhxM ; Written in the Stars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuDKK0mRki8
And can somebody please skate to Into the Woods? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsFx5835Qrg Even if it's just an exhibition? :)

Libertango has actually been used a lot, especially in ice dance. The last time the OD was tango there were enough Libertangos to make your ears bleed.

I would like Mao to skate to soundtrack of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind:) I remember Chen Lu skated to an arrangement of this music, but I prefer this arrangement better.

A very uplifting piece. I think this may also suit Mirai.

I also like La Musica Notturna Della Strade Di Madrid by Boccherini for Mao. Can't find a yuotube for the section I like.

For Mao's exhibition: Queen of ther Night aria from Magic flute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP9SX7V14Z4

Caroline Zhang LP: sound track from the Soong Sisters

For her Ex, I would prefer Mao to skate to a modern piece. I wouldn't mind if she skates to a pop ballad. :) As much as I like the calmer, balletic style, I feel Mao should continue going into new directions in terms of music. Going towards "Bells" direction didn't work out but staying in the "Chopin" phase isn't the answer either. Actually, I hope more ladies in general start doing more modern pieces for competitions instead of the the usual classical pieces over and over again.

I'd be very interested to see Mao skate to contemporary pop. Actually, I want to see her do a program to an Ayumi Hamasaki song; I've read that she likes Ayu's works. :)

I don't mind the ladies using classical pieces, but ideally the music should not have been used yet (or has not been used frequently), or if she insists on using an 'old warhorse', she should have a really innovative program that stands apart from others using the same music. That said, I think that a skater who wants to grow artistically should try different kinds of music.

I also was hoping that Yuna would do something dramatic/balletic, that is, in addition to not retiring. :)
My recommendation for her is Chopin's Ballade No.1. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG1Olvh7vCU)
What actually made me want her to skate to it is this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=Zj2B8XcX_u4&feature=related
It is part of Kameliendame from Stuttgart Ballet, a ballet version of the opera La Traviata. I don't necessarily want Yuna to act the same character, though I believe she and Wilson will be able to bring a great program out of this tragic story on passionate music.

For Mao, I actually thought of the music from Howl's moving castle which was linked in this thread. But it has somewhat waltz-like rhythm and it has not been that long since she used waltz. I would recommend Melody in F by Rubinstein.
Some might find it boring but I think it may go well with her soft knees to make a relaxed, elegant program.
Chopin's Etude As-dur (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C90Mz4hvAzI) will also fit her style, but I'm afraid if she uses this it might turn out to be Nocturn II.

And I want Besame Mucho for Daisuke! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iibS5UW1O5Y)
A guitar version by Ulli Boegershausen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5alOj2xYEYE) will be also nice, though I'm not sure it's the perfect arrangement for skating.

For Mirai, I can think of two.
Liebesleid by Kreisler(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jk16b9pvXY), and
Last Carnival by Acoustic Cafe(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG1gbOjWWdI).
Both will sound great with her skating to a more mature, lyrical program.

For Yuna: : Edward Scissorhands theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Uil_moZTQk (soft, edgy, great beat)
Actually, I've always thought of this track from the Edward Scissorhands OST for Yu-Na: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHWoT2mMfqc&feature=fvst
But the Main Theme you posted is a great piece of music, too. If I had to pick a skater to use it, I would go for either Stephane or Daisuke. More likely Daisuke, though--he's as expressive as Stephane, and he can pull off Edward's hair.

ETA: I can totally see Daisuke wearing something like Johnny Depp's costume in this film, too.
