Pick the music you want your favorite skaters to skate to in the coming season!

I know there was a thread talking about music choices in general, but in this thread feel free to list music selections for specific skaters. For guys I don't really care too much about what music they skate too as the jumps provide enough excitement, but for ladies the music is a key factor. These are just some songs I thought of for certain skaters, I'll add more later. Feel free to add your own ideas or comments!

Please, no Marton for Nagasu!

I don't know who I want to skate to these:

Dance Theme from Dust of Time
Married Life, from Up (but any part of the Up soundtrack would be great)
Beethoven's Cello Sonata #3 in A Major, 3rd movement
Estampes: Pagodes by Debussy
Debussy's Arabesque #1 (for Mao, maybe?)
Ravel's Pavane
Schumann's Traumerei
Gliere, Symphony #3, 3rd movement

I love Joe Hisaishi's compositions and I'm surprised they are not used more often. My absolute favorite is Howl's Moving Castle - the only person I can think of who used it was Jenni Vahamaa. I also love Summer from Kikujiro and One Summer's Day, from Spirited Away. Kristiene Gong had a program to the latter, but it could have been done to anything.

The music from "Young Victoria" is lovely too. There's a nice sweeping quality to it. And if anyone ever skates to the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, they'll be my favorite skaters ever.

Silverlake, a lot of selections for many skaters. Care to share why a particular piece for a specific skater, e.g. I like to know your thoughts of madame butterfly (Um bel di?) for Joannie, and blue danube for Laura

Nagasu LP: Zigeuneweisen (gypsy air) by Pablo de Sarasate. ~ 10 yrs ago AP skated to this piece at he US national exhibition when she won the jr title. This is a very spirited piece, and I think will show case Nagasu's fantastic spins, lovely spirals well, + she has speed to burn. This piece will provide her plenty opportunty to show off step sequence
www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8MmjLskmoY

Fumie exhibition: Ravel 's Piano concerto second movement. Depending on the pianist's interpretation, the feeling inspires from this mvt may range from teary poignancy to relaxation (walk in the park). www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpvv_7roIK0...EoATAC&usg=AFQjCNGNpm_Fc0ud9y2f0amUFt2d3kK7EQ
I like Yundi Li's interpretation (relax walk in the park, no need to have tears while watching Fumie)
I think this piece will help highlight Fumie's etheral skating style

I'm a sucker for warhorses:
Mao: SP - "Reverie" Debussy, LP - "Piano Concerto No. 2" Rachmaninoff
Mirai: LP - "Swan Lake" Tchaikovsky
Ashley: LP - "Liebestraum" Liszt

Well I play violin in an Orchestra, so I'm familiar with wayy too much classical music. Mostly though, I was bored. Joannie does well with powerful songs and seeing Amelie (who reminds me of Joannie - though obviously not as good/polished) skate to Madame Butterfly this season made me think Joannie could be simply wonderful if she skated to similar music.

As for Laura, I'd like to see her take on a waltz. I don't think she has done it before and she has such a beautiful, classical style that I think it would be lovely to see her skate to Strauss.

Please no Rachmaninoff for Mao! I like the SP music you picked for her though :agree:!

Mirai's Swan Lake I think could get too cutesy - unless she does the music from the Black Swan variation and then it would be fantastic! I really want Mirai to skate to mature music selections in the coming season. She is very animated and I know that works with cutesy programs but she can still be expressive in a more elegant program.

Love Liebestraum for Ashley! I didn't even think of that, I think few people could pull it off but she definitely could!

:eek:Wow, silverlake22, you've given a lot of thought on this topic. I can't really think of one particular piece for my favorite skater, Yu Na. :) I think she can skate to any music, and I will enjoy her performance thoroughly as long as she doesn't skate to The Phantom of Opera or Caroline Zhang's LP music in 2008/2009.

As for Mao, I think she'll thrive with music like Tango or something in Spanish style. I LOVE her last two gala: Tango and Caprice. Imagine Mao working her facial expressions and acting with a flirty and sensual music like Tango. That will make a very strong SP.:agree:

I am an audience not (performer, since you are in an orchestra and have to deal with fellow musicians/performers and conductors) I will never get "bored" with classical music.

Joannie does well with powerful songs and seeing Amelie (who reminds me of Joannie - though obviously not as good/polished) skate to Madame Butterfly this season made me think Joannie could be simply wonderful if she skated to similar music.

Agree that Joannie willl do well with powerful music, but Um Bel Di is a bit sad. Of course performance is just performance, skating to a piece of music about pining a lover's return does not necessary bring saddness to her in real life
As for Laura, I'd like to see her take on a waltz. I don't think she has done it before and she has such a beautiful, classical style that I think it would be lovely to see her skate to Strauss.
Blue Danube reminds me too much about Kristi, maybe the Emperor's waltz or one of the 100000 pieces of waltz written by the Strauss family.

Since you oppose Rach PC2 for Mao. I diagree about Taco Bell ( I mean Pachabel) canon for Mao. When I hear that piece I think Caro. By no means Canon is Caro's signature piece, but Caro has chosen so many top 100 pieces from the classical genre, whenever I hear any overplayed top 100 classical pieces I think of Caro. In addition the Canon (which really is a passacalglia not a canon) lack the up and down tension to be great skating music for anyone.

:eek:Wow, silverlake22, you've given a lot of thought on this topic. I can't really think of one particular piece for my favorite skater
I think it is often difficult to think of a piece for one's most favorite skater. IN the past many fans talked about wishing MK skate to this or that, and I often come up empty at least for her competitive programs. I have alot of ideas for her exhibition.

I'm a sucker for warhorses:
Mao: SP - "Reverie" Debussy, LP - "Piano Concerto No. 2" Rachmaninoff
Mirai: LP - "Swan Lake" Tchaikovsky
Ashley: LP - "Liebestraum" Liszt

Nothing wrong with warhorses, they are war horses for a good reason. Ashley Liebestraum, I definitely agree. Swanlake for Mirai will be good, but the choreographer needs to pay very good attention, since Tat had done a very good job with swan lake for Cohen.

Many fans love Debussy for Mao. The timbre in Debussy's music is infinitely interesting, and I honestly think very few skaters can do Debussy justice, Mao definitely will a good interpreter of Debussy because she is so light/ etheral.

Wow, silverlake 22, I've never come across a lot of these choices...will be listening to them soon. What a coincidence that you listed Memory for Yu-Na, because I was just contemplating yesterday that she'd be fantastic with a 'Cats' program (not just Memory though, but also with Jellicle Cats). I can imagine her already in a feline-inspired costume, and her past performances show that she has the 'cat-eyes' down perfectly. But I have to support chapis about Black Swan for Yu-Na--have you seen her Omnia II commercial? :)

Yeah, Yuna would be great in a "Cats" program, I also think Miki could do quite well with that music too. Black Swan Yuna would do a good job with but I fear it would seem to similar to Danse Macabre, which is one of her signature SPs. Plus when I think of Yuna I don't really think of ballet music, she is graceful and elegant but her speed and powerful jumps I think could be better showcased with more powerful music like she has always used in the past. She often uses soft music in the FS, but never really ballet music, most of the time it is more abstract, which makes it great because her interpretation shines through :agree:.

But at the same time, it could be her challenge, ne? To adopt to a softer, more balletic type music, which could push her artistic and physical skills. Besides, it's all up to interpretation; Yu-na could be a fierce black swan; elegant but strong w/an edge (and balletic form, which is not really her forte, but this can push her, especially in terms of pointing those toes and getting full extensions, beautiful positions, etc)

My second time of responding to your suggestion of music for Mao. This time about LP. I think Rach PC2 is a good choice for her, but her choreographer/music editor may need to do a bit of work. Rach PC2 is a wonderful piece of music, many skaters won multiple medals with this piece Chen Lu, Cohen. Fumie etc With the right the cut of the music from Rach PC2, I think Mao will glide through the ice like a butterfly over a pond of waterlilies with this piece.

Not sure why another poster categorically rejected Rach for Mao. The one time Mao skated to Rach won her olys silver, and world gold, not shabby. For some reason, both Mao fans and Mao detractors heavily criticize Bells for different reasons. I guess fans of Mao prefer the light, angelic Mao to Chopin solo piano music etc. Tat chose an orchestral version of Prelude to C sharp minor (Bells of Russia), which was not what Rach had in mind when he first wrote the piece anyway. It was written for piano. Anyway Mao was on fire when she skated Rach's Prelude at worlds. Unless another skater in the future can do a better job at interpreting Prelude to C sharp minor, I consider this as one of Mao's signagure pieces.

About "no Rachmaninoff for Mao" from silverlake, I can't disagree more. I think Mao will be so good at Rach's rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, thre are 24 variations to choose from and mood ranges from subdue ethereal in e.g variatin 18 (somewhere in time theme) to firy ( and I mean literally) variation 7 taken from Dies Irae. I thnk Mao will be firy (without being Macarbe) if she skates to variation 7

Silverlake I really disagree the generalization of no one composer for one skater. I mentioned earlier that I want Ravel PC2 second mvt for the so ethereal Fumie. I can easily see the same Ravel piece for the even more ethereal Mao. Oh I do think of YuNa when I think of Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit.

silverlake, you have the "Song for India" as a link for Joannie's LP, not Madame Butterfly. Some intriguing choices for all.

oleada, Eric Radford and Anne Marie Giroux skated to "Summer" this season (Link)

My biggest issue with Rachimaninoff is that it is becoming overused in figure skating programs, and I'd like to see Mao perform to more original selections of music. Her exhibition pieces are so great because they are upbeat and unique, Rachmaninoff in general and especially Paginini is reptitive and boring. Yuzuru Hanyu and Rachael Flatt both performed to Paginini this season and I didn't find either program great, they are such talented skaters and I felt that wasn't really showcased in those programs. My all time favorite Mao program was her Chopin SP from the 06-07 season so I think picking soft, airy music will really be a smart choice, and while Paginini is soft at parts, it is also heavy in others.

^^ I just fixed the link for Joannie, thanks for the update.

As for Yuna doing a ballet program, it would be cool to see. She isn't particularly balletic IMO but I'm sure she could do a good job with any program. If she does a ballet piece though, I hope it is dramatic, Yuna has the best facial expressions and body language in the business. I think she could do well in a Midsummer Night's Dream program where she portrays Tatania http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LvCV-LHdww&feature=related , you know, now that she's a queen and everything :)

I would love to see Yu-na do a balletic program. 1). It would push her artistically and technically and 2). I have a feeling to truly achieve the look needed, she'd need to take ballet lessons to get full extensions, excellent posture and carriage (I think it's fine as it is, but her posture right now would not suit ballet music), and last but not least... pointed toes. :) I think it would challenge her and that's what you need to stay at the top; a challenge.

Btw, what about potential choreographs for the skaters for next season? I'd love for Yu-na to work w/Tom Dickson again; he choreographed Tango de Roxanne, which is one of my absolute favorites

Roxanne was amazing  but Yuna and David are so tight I don't see her leaving him and getting someone else to choreograph her programs. Yuna, Brian, and David are a dream team!
