Donlan & Speroff in 4th! I love the way Andrew Speroff moves on the ice! It doesn't hurt that he is hot hot heat either! I hope they can skate a clean LP and move up!

It's too bad that Maia fell on the twizzles but their PCS scores are actually quite high and show that the judges would have placed them well except for that technical snafu.

I'm optimistic for their FD. And also the pictures of Maia from ice dance.com show that this has been a growing summer for her. That little bit of added height are all they need as a team to make them truly come together and start to build a more mature look and feel as they move into seniors.

Maia and Alex are beautiful skaters. Can't wait for the rest of the season.

If Maia grew that much this year, I would expect them to have some readjustment issues. Good that they started here at Nebelhorn-early experience is good!

The shock here is the low scores of P&B

I heard they got some level 1s?

Machida not only won silver at 4CC, he also just missed the podium at Japanese Nationals last year. Here's his SP from JN:

IMO he's a brilliant skater, but was quite inconsistent during his junior years (won one JGP in 2008, but placed 9th in another). That's probably why we haven't heard much about him until 4CC last year.

I agree Doris. Growth spurts usually mean readjustments on technical elements, so this too shall pass. Sounds like Maia grew at least 2 inches since last season. Pictures from Nebelhorn practice on ice-dance.com show that she is no longer the adorable little cutie, and growing up right before our eyes into quite a lovely lady, well matched with Alex.

Ice-dance.com also has a helpful article explaining their low technical score. They gave up at least 7-8 points getting no credit at all for the twizzle element, something they usually get very good GOE on and had the fall deduction. They also had level one for part of the compulsory. Level one is especially hard on point loss. A level 2 would have been another 2.5 points. The fall could not have helped component marks but were still a close 4th on components. Without the fall they would be right in the thick of things as I think many expected. The article also explains P&B's 3rd place overall score - level ones for footwork and part of compulsory, but highest components. Helps make sense of puzzling results for Short dance.

They are strong skaters and there is much to look forward to for sure. Better to get all the kinks out at Nebelhorn than the main events. Am sure this was also a smart learning opportunity for P&B. I truly enjoy both of these teams and am sure whatever they learn from this event will be to their advantage later in the season.

Low score for Hecken and McCorkell; I honestly expected higher placements for them here! But Hecken is coming back from an injury of sorts right? But yay for Kiira and the Helgesson-sisters! Kiira has very respectable lead; pretty good score for her so early in the season! Can't wait to hear some detailed reports!
