Paul & Islam withdrew. She has a back problem

Here's the scores from the SD.=: There is a huge gap to Gorshkova & Butikov; perhaps Hoffman & Zavozin may get a bronze here. It would be nice to see Hungary with a GP medal again!

Here are the scores from the last GP appearances of all the skaters here at Cup of Russia, with a few other high scores of interest for comparison's sake:

Davis & White NHK 98.24
Pechalat & Bourzat Cup of China 95.47
Crone & Poirier Skate Canada 91.47
Bobrova & Soloviev Cup of China 89.54
Shibutani & Shibutani 88.35 at Skate America
Paul & Islam Skate Canada 87.61
Faiella & Scali Cup of China 82.31
Ilinykh & Katsapalov NHK 78.16
Hoffman & Zavozin Cup of China 78.13
Hubbell & Hubbell Cup of China 76.48
Gorshkova & Butikov Skate Canada 75.89
Mysliveckova & Novak NHK 69.97

Barring slipups, I expect Faiella & Scali to win the free dance. In the free dance, Bobrova & Soloviev have clearly distanced themselves from the rest of the skaters here. However, as Imaginary Pogue pointed out in the Short Dance thread, much of the distance was in TES. The PCS scores are much closer. In fact, Paul & Islam's PCS scores were so high at Skate Canada, that one would declare them the favorites for second place (or first, if Faiella & Scali slip again). However, Skate Canada was a very high scoring event, on the whole, so I would still put Bobrova & Soloviev as my guess for second place here.

Again for comparison:
Davis & White at NHK 52.02
Pechalat & Bourzat at CoC 48.55
Faiella & Scali at CoC 46.45
Paul & Islam at SC 45.99
Crone & Poirier at SC 45.73
Bobrova & Soloviev at CoC 44.83
Ilinykh & Katsapalov at NHK 42.31
Shibutanis at SA 41.56 (The Shibutanis excelled in the TES, rather than PCS, a result I guess would have to do with their speed or lack of it compared to some other teams.)
Hoffman & Zavozin at CoC 40.85
Hubbells at CoC 37.84
Mysliveckova & Novak at NHK 35.81
Gorshkova & Butikov at SC 34.04

I'm hearing the Hubbells have withdrawn as well.

What the heck? This is sad. It's like there's a boycott or something! haha.

This is really wierd. It's a shame about Paul/Islam. They probably wanted the chance to redeem themselves after yesterday. I just hope she's better by Canadian nationals...they've got an amazing chance of making the world team this year if Virtue and Moir don't return to finish off the season, which I suspect they won't.

Or maybe the Russians sent out a Memo to all teams with order of finish decided as 1) Bobrova/Soloviev 2) Ilinykh/Katsalapov 3) Gorshkov/Butikov. And the Hungarians and Czechs didn't get the memo.

I feel sorry for Gorshkova and Butikov. They are going to have to realize for themselves that their coach does not know best when it comes to giving them programs. Their programs this year are from the archives-- and not in a good way. Really dated and doesn't show anything engaging about their personalities. Their coach and choreographer looks non-plussed too. Like they just don't get it. What a shame since this team is very technically proficient and could be a decent on the podium at internationals team.

I'm about the post about that in the ice dance prospect thread. Just waiting for Bobrova & Soloviev to be confirmed as the winners here...C&Z have a very good chance.
