This is for the Kwaniacs:

The highly anticipated Marina Bay Sands (MBS) skating rink will be launched on December 18 with the guest appearance by world-champion skater Michelle Kwan.

To mark the inaugural opening, Kwan will stage two figure-skating performances on December 18 and 19, at 2pm on both days.

Also, if you're in the area, I believe you can score tickets and an opportunity to meet her

Thanks for the news - from the headline, I thought this meant that she or she and her family were owners; I take it she is "just" the headliner for the opening. I wonder if videos will be available???

Round trip air fare, Detroit to Singapore, $945.

Hotel, two nights in the Orchid Suite, $1065 (includes tickets to either the Lion King or Riverdance). Or you can slum it for $765 for the Club Room, instead.

Michelle Kwan: FREE! All you have to do is sign up for your free Advantage Card. With this card you can earn free points by gambling away a certain amount of money in the casino.

Are you gonna do it, Mathman?

More details. If you sign up for a FREE Premium Advantage Card and spend $300 in the casino, you get to take a picture with Michelle FOR FREE!

By the way, this new rink will have artificial ice. I guess that is some sort of white teflon?

Here are some interesting facts about figure skating in Singapore. Singapore is a member of the ISU. There are two skating rinks in Singapore (besides this one), the Fiji Ice palace and Kallang Ice World. They sent a skater, Brittany Lau, to junior worlds last year (46th). They also have a speed skating program.

Anything else you-all want me to look up about my favorite figure skating country?

And right now it's my favorite skating country too, Math. What a neat event! And rats, I can't go. I trust there will be YouTube links after the fact. Please put an alert up here if videos appear.

I doubt there will be much in the way of jumping if it's a teflon rink, right? Does anyone have experience or knowledge of artificial rinks? I saw a tiny one once (can't remember the occasion, but I remember I was very anxious for the well-being of the skaters).

It's still fun being a Kwaniac!

I CAN'T BELIEVE MICHELLE KWAN IS GOING TO SINGAPORE...

during the time I won't be there (I'm at university overseas). :(

But honestly? I can't see this attracting a large crowd of Singaporeans. Figure skating (and, by extension, Michelle Kwan) is almost unknown.

Yeah. I'm not sure if Singaporeans know who Michelle is. I haven't seen any promotions on this here also. If they're offering this only to Premier Advantage members then that's gonna limit the exposure. I was at MBS last Saturday and a lady was giving us premier advantage application forms but never mentioned anything about Michelle skating. If I'd have known about this then maybe I'd have signed up in an instant.

maybe they're hoping that Mathman and the rest of the Kwaniacs will fly halfway round the world to go see her?

When I first heard this news I thought it must have something to do with Michelle's Public Envoy duties, which has basically been on hold during the current administration.
The whole scenario seems strange to me. Michelle flying half way across the world to open an ice rink. Also I have not read any other press on this trip at all. Just saying....

^ I thought about that, too! For one thing, this comes right in the middle of the Fletcher School final exam period (Decmeber 15 - 21st -- I looked it up. :) ) Maybe Michelle doesn't have any exams this semester, if she is just taking masters thesis hours. Still...

Plus, if you follow all the links to the hotel and shopping district, the main idea I got was that they wanted Michelle as window dressing to help separate rich people from their money -- like the girls who work the crowds at casinos.

Anyway, these guys are definitely high rollers. They must have made Mich3lle an offer she couldn't refuse, if this is legit.

By the way, here is the full picture (aka, "why all lady skaters should wear white boots and not tan with leggings over the tops.")

Oh darn! Now I will be forced to play the Mega Millions lottery game tonight so I can be considered a high roller and see Michelle!!! (unless of course, my son needs a new pair of cleats to go along with his new uni... soccer is going to be the death of me...)

And I hope she's just window dressing and not skating on the artificial ice... that stuff is like if the Devil and Kate Gossling decided to have a baby that people could skate on... evil. Its hard, hurts when you fall and even worse leaves black tar smears on your clothes. Jumping, spining, and crossovers are impossible. Its just an awful, awful invention... bad science people! bad!

Thanks for the info, demarinis5. I wonder what Michelle's itinerary is. Will she fly back and forth twice, or will she be in Singapore or traveling in Asia for whole month?
