Well, Japanese second tire skaters after Dai, Taka, and Oda,namely, Mura,Machida, Hanyu are pretty strong IMO.
All those three have a quad and huge 3a's. What I like about them better than American three representatives to the world this year is that their SS is much better than that of American counter part. Especially, Mura and Machida, they skate like Dai. Hanyu is still young so it may be a few years till he gets that type of skating skills.

What do you think about their SS? I specially like Mura's.

I'm not sure what you're looking for in SS genki. Ross Miner has excellent SS, as does Hanyu. Machida has promise, but I get zero out of Mura. It's not that Mura is bad at anything, but that Mura doesn't put all his passion into skating. You can see it in both his posture, attack, and the fact that he will often give up on rotating jumps. I get the feeling that Mura doesn't like skating all that much.

Hanyu is already a super star in Japan. He nearly crashed the podium this year at Japanese nationals. He is going to be one of the tier 1 Japanese male skaters next season if Daisuke retires. And more than Mura or Machida or skaters from anywhere really, Hanyu has star quality. He doesn't asks for attention, he arrests it when he performs on ice. If he can keep his interest in skating and health up, Hanyu is one to watch for in Sochi.

P.S. relevant to this thread: Hanyu has already landed at least two clean quads in competition that I've seen this season.

I'm not sure what you're looking for in SS genki.

I like a skater with soft bent knees, deep edge and the one who looks like his/her skates are sticky onto the ice. Dai's is the best example. He skates like his skates were sucked into the ice. I love it.
I did not know too much of Ross Miner so I just took a look at him. Well, SS is fine, but I guess he does not use his upper body at all to express himself. I am a dancer, so from dancing perspective, he does not have a correct dance posture yet.
About Mura, I do not know. I really like the way he skates.

Hanyu is already a super star in Japan.
I am aware of that. I agree that he has a special star quality. However, at moment, he lacks in stamina and his skating tends to be rough at the end of FS. He can not control upper body well, due to fatigue and also ss suffers too.

Sorry, this is not this thread. But Mura landed quad too. I do not know how many times, though.

Whatever happened to Men's Figure Skating? Well, it digressed into the sport of barrel jumping. How many air rotations can the best man do? How many barrels can the best man jump?

Who are the best Men's Figure Skaters, sort of like John Curry was in his era? Would the skater you name have to have a Quad?

Maybe we could do a poll of which skater pleased you most: CURRY v. PLUSHENKO?

Whatever happened to Men's Figure Skating?

Maybe we could do a poll of which skater pleased you most: CURRY v. PLUSHENKO?

Men's figure skating disappeared when figures did--in 1989. Maybe the US needs to change what it calls figure skating into what the rest of the world calls it--artistic skating.

Mura is one of the most consistant quad jumper in men skating today. I think he is underrate.

With one solo and one combo, both well done, I would say he's good and has great potential. Hanyu, too, has two of the best quads this season. Very impressive. The quality of their quads bodes well for consistency but not enough has been done this season to make such claim.

eta Mura did both his quads at the same event, NHK, impressive but has he participated in more competitions since? Hanyu did his at the first and last event so far, so that's more of an indication of consistency. Let's hope he will show us another great one at the JWC!

Apart from quad at NHK Mura land clean quad at Asian winter game. He jump fully rotate quad with negative geo at triglav trophy (I can't find the performance) and he fall on quad at Merano. Yes! his quad is not that consistent, may be his performance at NHK stuck in my mind to much. Anyway, he is the most consistent quad jumper form Japan after Oda (or even more comparing the event he and Oda participated this season with the quad land, I'm really not sure about the number). And with his technique ability I think he deserve more international competition.

Machida land quad last season and at the begining of last year, I don't know what happen to his consistency after the grand prix season started.

Oda has one successful quad (0 GOE) and the best quad combo this season but he falls on all his other attempts, so I wouldn't call him consitent either. The number does show that he does them in his program regularly, as do Chan, Reynolds and Takahashi. (I'm not sure which of the Europeans do them in every competition.) There are more quads landed by the Eoropeans than by the Japanese. Other than Chan, quad is not a stong suit of the top Men, demonstrating that it's just another arsenal among the many the best competitors have. But it makes it so much more dangerous when one of the top guys has it dependably.

Then it means that Mura is the most suscessful japannese guy in landing clean quad in term of quantity this season (combo count) since he has three clean quad while Oda land only two! ;)

It seems skaters who are really consistent on quad are Chan since GPF and Van der Perren.

Not so fast. Has Hanyu done them outside of NHK and 4CC? He has the best quality among the Japanese but hasn't done many of them, either because of lack of opportunities or that he doesn't do it in every competition. It also appears that NHK yielded the bumper crop of successful quads from the Japanese who then lost momentum.

Being inconsistent doesn't mean Oda and Kozuka can't pull of the most beautiful ones at Worlds. I'm less sure of Dai's chances.

eta I must include Fernandez among the best quad jumpers. Gachinsky is not shabby either. Reynolds seems to have lost his sparks this season after making history in SC. Too bad, because he ready is good at them, for years now. Maybe the attention by the media pitting him against Chan at the Canadian Nationals got to him and the poor showing carried over to the 4CC.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Yuzuru did another quad at regional competition, but that quad landing look a bit..... to me. In sheet Hanyu try quad in his LP at every competition but at cup of Russia and japanese national he triple them, the less three(NHK, Regional and 4CC) he land it.

The point I make about Mura, I intend to talk about quantity not quality.

It's hard to tell if these practice quads are fully rotated or not. Menshov's second quads of the combo are all two-footed for sure.

It all comes down to doing it in a program in a competion.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine that the second of that quad/quad combo wouldn't get a << in competition. And doing it in practice and not even in a program is miles away from doing it in competition (it's still an impressive attempt and as long as he didn't injure himself good on Menshov for trying!). Even Plushenko, who may be one of the most talented jump rotators in skating history, has landed every kind of quad (except the axel? maybe that too?) in practice, but only ever landed the quad toe in competition!

bibi24, the reason the Russian Federation is sending him to Worlds instead of Menshov isn't because of what he lands in practice, but solely based on his superior results this season in international competition (Menshov has finished lower than Gachinski at every international competition they were competing together in this season, and had some low finishes even in b events). Unlike the US federation, the Russian Federation never decide on their World team solely based on nationals results. Even the national champion is guaranteed nothing. Their athletes must prove themselves internationally, something Gachinski did better than Menshov.

Random notes:

Joubert and Kozuka finally did their rare beautiful quads this season. KVDP, Gachinsky, Brezina, and Bradly all did their best quads at WC too, though Bradley bombed a combo. 6 PB and in Kozuka's case, the only successful quad this season, 2nd best at WC. Did the special ice help?

Despite doing the 3rd best quad of the WC, KVDP finished 18th. Fernandez had 2 decent quads and finished 10th.

Verner's quad really cost him.

Chan edged out Oda for best combo.
