Need some opinions

I'm considering making a skating compilation tape as a Christmas present for a friend. I've got a couple of lists - one of definites, and another one that I have to choose from to fill up the tape. I can't decide myself, so I was hoping I'd get some opinions here.

Also - Being fans, we may be biased, but do you think it's a good idea to make a compilation tape for a friend if you don't know if they like skating or not? (And you don't want to spoil the surprise?) I know one of my friends likes it, but not sure about some others. I'm not even sure whether to make more than one tape or not - it's extremely time consuming and if my vcr plays up, I probably won't have the sanity to make more than one tape, although I'd also like a copy for myself.

Ok, here's my list of definites. Let me know what ya all think:

Torvill & Dean, 1984 Europeans FD (Bolero)
Gordeeva & Grinkov, 1988 Olympics SP (March of the Toreadors)
Katarina Witt, 1988 Olympics LP (Carmen)
Liz Manley, 1988 Olympics LP
Rahkamo & Kokko, 1994 Europeans FD (La Strada)

Shen & Zhao, 2003 Worlds LP (Turandot)
Sasha Cohen, 2003 Worlds SP (Malaguena)
Michelle Kwan, 2003 Worlds SP (The Feeling Begins)
Julia Lautowa, 2003 Worlds LP (Malaguena)
Bourne & Kraatz, 2003 Worlds EX (Sadeness)
Torvill & Dean, 1994 FTM Tour (Encounter)
Tara Lipinski, 2001 SOI (Tiny Dancer)
Kristi Yamaguchi, 2001 SOI (Desert Rose)
*Kristi Yamaguchi, 2002 SOI (Trust & Try)
Kurt Browning (That's Entertainment)

(note: * means I can only put that on if the tape works - when I tried to copy it before, it didn't.)

That takes up roughly 164 minutes. If I use a 4 hour tape (in SP), I can fit another 76 minutes on there, about 19 routines or so. And I have about 7 billion to choose from. And I can't decide, so any opinions? Or thoughts about those I've already listed?

The other possibles:

Brian Boitano, 1988 Olympics LP (Napoleon)
Brian Orser, 1988 Olympics LP
Brasseur & Eisler, 1994 Olympics LP (Rhamsody on a Theme of Paganini)
Mishkutenok & Dmitriev, 1994 Olympics LP (Rachmaninov)
Gordeeva & Grinkov, 1994 Olympics/Europeans LP (Moonlight Sonata)
Elvis Stojko, 1994 Olympics SP (Frogs in Space)
Kurt Browning, 1994 Olympics LP (Casablanca)
Tanja Szewczenko, 1994 Olympics SP
Oksana Baiul, 1994 Olympics SP (Swan Lake)
Grishuk & Platov, 1997 Worlds EX (You'll See)
Tara Lipinski, 1998 Olympics LP (The Rainbow [?])
*Anissina & Peizerat, 2000 Worlds FD (Carmina Burana)
Michelle Kwan, 2000 Worlds LP (The Red Violin)
Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze, 2001 Worlds LP (City Lights)
Irina Slutskaya, 2001 Worlds SP (Culture)
Michelle Kwan, 2001 Worlds LP (Song of the Black Swan)
Irina Slutskaya, 2001 Worlds LP (Don Quioxte)
Alexander Abt, 2002 Europeans LP (Rachmaninov)
Lobacheva & Averbukh, 2002 Europeans FD
Ina & Zimmerman, 2002 Olympics LP (Rhamsody on a Theme of Paganini)
Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze, 2002 Olympics LP (Meditation)
Sale & Pelletier, 2002 Olympics LP (Love Story)
Takeshi Honda, 2002 Olympics SP (Don Quioxte)
Alexei Yagudin, 2002 Olympics LP (Man in the Iron Mask)
Lobacheva & Averbukh, 2002 Olympics OD
Lang & Tchernyshev, 2002 Olympics FD (Parisienne Walkways [first few seconds cut off])
Fumie Suguri, 2002 Olympics LP (Moonlight Sonata)
Sarah Hughes, 2002 Olympics LP
Takeshi Honda, 2002 Olympics EX (Sing Sing Sing)
Bourne & Kraatz, 2002 Worlds FD (Michael Jackson medley)
Brian Joubert, 2003 Worlds SP (Time)
Bourne & Kraatz, 2003 Worlds OD
Elena Sokolova, 2003 Worlds SP (Samson & Delilah)
**Michelle Kwan, 2003 Worlds LP (Aranjuez)
**Elena Sokolova, 2003 Worlds LP
**Sasha Cohen, 2003 Worlds LP
**Fumie Suguri, 2003 Worlds LP
Yamaguchi, Meno, Petrov, 2001 SOI (they did an interesting "pairs" routine together)
Kurt Browning (Brickhouse)
Kurt Browning (Romeo & Juliet)
Kurt Browning (Nyah)

(note: * means I want to put this on, but the tape wavers a little a couple of times during it. Still watchable, just not perfect. ** means if I put these on, I'd want to put all 4 on. I just think the competition between them makes interesting watching.)

And I have to pick 19 out of those. :\ Obviously I have some I'm leaning towards, but I'd be interested in opinions. I want to get a good variety too.

Any ideas? :)

Hmmmm...I definitely think you should include Paul Wylie's 1992 Olympic LP to "Henry V". I made my mother watch that years ago (she at that time being a non-fan) and she was extremely impressed. She now compares every male skater she sees to Wylie! Also, Michelle Kwan's "East of Eden" SP from the 2001 Nationals has always been another one of my outstanding favorites.

Moonlight Sonata needs to be on there.
Id put Sashas 2003 worlds ex on there too.
Oksana Baiul, 1994 Olympics SP (Swan Lake) is a must
Kurt Browning (Nyah) (I love this program soooo much)

I think that you definetely should add some pro skating from Ilia Kulik (maybe from the recent Ice Wars) onto your tape.

I would say Mishkutenok & Dmitriev and Lang & Tchernyshev. Even with a few seconds missing, "Parisienne Walkways" is well worth it.

Well, I don't have to agree with every single choice, but all in all, WOW!, what a collection, what a present! Just wish I'd find something like that under MY Christmas tree ... ;)

Anke

PS: Personally I'd add the Duchesnays with "Jungle Dance" plus "Missing" I + II and Ilia Kulik (probably "Rockit"), of course! And also something by
Viktor Petrenko! :)

I would add Michelle Kwan's 98 Nationals performance of Lyra as it was just breathtaking. Nancy Kerrigan's 94 Olympic Long program is also a good choice as it was her best LP of a lifetime.

Just a note - I can't include anything from US Nationals, as I'm not American so I don't get to see it.

Thanks for the ideas so far! I'm still confused though, lol. Keep em coming...

Swan Lake and Nyah are two of the ones I was leaning towards. :)

Which Moonlight Sonata do you mean? There's more than one on the list. I thought about Sasha's R&J too, but decided against it because it's not my favourite routine of hers, I prefer Sentimental Waltz and Malaguena.

What a great present ! Add my name to the list of people who would love to be your friend!

I can see giving this to someone even if you're not sure they are fans. Perhaps they've just never had a chance to see really good skating. You could be introducing them to a sport that they will enjoy for years to come. Plus, considering the state figure skating is in, it could use all the fans it can get.

For that reason, I would include the performances from 2003 Worlds. It would be good background should they go on to watch 2004 Worlds.
