Christy Krall seems to be an enigma to me. I've never heard of her until she started coaching Patrick Chan. I read about the innovative techniques and technology she used to improve his jumps and it definitely paid off. With Patrick Chan's record breaking success, why doesn't she train more elite skaters? Or why aren't more elite skaters flocking to her?

I believe Patrick Chan is her first truly high profile student. Often times, it takes having a student making it big to get a coach noticed by other skaters and fans. I'm sure more elite skaters will flock to her, if she chooses to take them on.

Patrick once expressed his gratitude for Krall taking him because she was not coaching full time.

She was more of a technical specialist using the Dartfish software to help skaters with their jumping. Don Law had introduced Patrick to her and he started going to and staying with her so much that Law "fired" him.

Krall and Chan are a very good match personality wise as she keeps him loose and happy in both training and competitive situations. I am not sure if she is an all round coach as Patrick had a solid foundation from Mr. Colson and still lists Lori Nichol as his co-coach. At the time Patrick started going and eventually switching to Krall, jump training was and probably still is a priority so Krall fit the role well. Unlike Law, she does not "hoard" her student, instead she gets him whatever specialists and mentors he needs. She emphasizes Team Chan and discipline and system in his training. And that seems to be what works best for him now. I think Patrick's progression from a great basic coach to a cutting edge technical and scientific team contributes to his success as each way of learning is appropriate and optimal at each stage.

Krall is part of the team available to skaters training at Colorado Springs but I am not sure she has any full time student besides Chan. She must have seen how special he was and known how to bring out the best in him. She may still prefers to work limited hours and as a specialist and part of a team.

Thanks for that explanation, SkateFiguring! So Christy is more of a specialist. Chan is probably going to remain one of her few full on students then (and even there Lori Nichols has a lot of input). In the article about Agnes switching coaches, it was mentioned that Christy would assist her in training, now I'm getting what it means.

A day in the life of Patrick Chan by Kurt Browning

Christy Krall and her system are featured.

eta. Joshua Farris has also switched from Tom Z. to Krall and Demon Allen as his coaches, all at Colorado Springs. For Agnes, it's confusing because Krall is supposed to be her coach in day to day training while her main coach is in Chicago and the ex-coach is at the same rink with her and Krall. Essentially she's staying where she is, with a different coach, but announced the switch to Santee in Chicago.

BTW, Farris's training cost is $70,000/year, for a 16 year old moving into Senior rank.
