Chinese figure skating is mostly known for their strong pairs these days. Pair skating is the most popular discipline and the Chinese pairs have had a lot of
success. But the first Chinese World and Olympic medalist and World Champion was Lu Chen, who competed in the 90s.

Han Yan looking to become China’s next skating star

I hope he will be world's skating star.:) I am just not sure that China is ready to raise a male single champion but hey, Korea was not ready to have a female single champion either!

AFAIK, Han YAN did a 3A once. At Nationals.

As he did not include 3A at international competitions, I guess his 3A is not so stable yet. Some report says he is now practicing 4T, landing them often in practice. Let's wait and see.

His 3-3 is huge when successful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QUdpiajiUw&feature=related

I agree with the article that skating skills and musicality are his strength.:)

I'm very impressed with him as well! He has amazing glide on the ice that it feels like he can go on doing footwork forever without any progressives. And the air that he gets on his jumps is really stunning! I love the way he goes into all the jumps at full speed. Also really enjoyed that Jr. Worlds performance to Zigeunerweisen - so powerful and expressive. It really speaks volume about the quality of his skating that he was able to place as well as he did without a single 3A or 3-3 (in the LP).
However, besides getting a consistent 3A for next season I do hope he works with perhaps a dance coach on his arms and upper body. He would be even more amazing.

As far as I know, he is now keeping working on his 3A and Quads. He even tried 4F. Of course he failed and that was just a try. But one thing I want to stress is that he has problems with his bones. He broke his legs several times during these years' training, sometimes even one time a year. Hope he can get better coaches and choreographers.

Do you happen to know who the coach is? She seems to be nice... according to some fans, Han Yan is a very shy kind of guy and gets some moral support from his coach.
As we cannot see any possibility for him to leave China in the near future, I really hope his coaching system/choreography works well for him.

His coach is Jia Shuguang. I personally don't konw her and I never met her. But according to some athletes in Chinese National Team which I'm familiar with, Jia is a pretty good coach. In the team, the best coach for men single skating is probably Gao Haijun - the coach of Li Chengjiang. There is possibility that Yan could get a world-class choreographer, only if he is good enough. During season 2009-2010, Chinese single skaters Wu Jialiang and Liu Yan's programs are choreographed by David Wilson.

Thank you, enderstar. You sound very knowledgeable.
Unfortunately, I have never seen other Chinese men skate except Nan Song but I hope China has a better chance with promising young skaters.

Very cute Han Yan in 2009. Fast and fearless despite the jump mistake.

He has grown up so much!

How cute he was in 2009!
I just happen to be a Chinese figure skating fan.
Li Chengjiang is probably the best Chinese male single skater ever. He placed fourth at world champs and was 2003 Four Continents champion - the first one for Chinese male skaters and the only one until now. Song Nan is also a promising star.He has really good jump techniques but still has a lot to work on.

Speaking of a cute Han Yan, here he was in 2005. He looks so young!

Amazing skating skills and musicality. And I love the way he attacks his jumps without hesitation. Very good centered spins, too. It's obvious that he's just a skating prodigy, like Yu-na was. But Yu-na didn't gain elite level success until moving abroad to train at the age of 16. Han Yan may need to do the same...

75.76 for TES!

His TES has tremendously heighten because he landed 4T and 3-3 this time but PCS has not.

Very creative way to fall! (Serioisly, why does he take so little time before 3A? That's marvelous but you should land the jump anyway.)

Interview and medal ceremony (What did he say?)

Misha Ge, overall 2nd but first in the SP was given higher PCS than Han Yan.

Congratulation to Han Yan, he is one of my favorite skaters.

If he is able to land 3A and quad consistently, he will be unbeatable as his other aspect of skating is already excellent. He has great skating skills, transition and musicality.

I can't wait for Han Yan vs. Hanyu at 2018 olympic (I'm a bit worry whether Yuzuru will be able to become top two skaters by that time though ).

Actually, I was thinking Yan Han vs. Jason Brown :p

Hopefully the Chinese federation will be willing to invest more in Yan and let him work with top-notch choreographers in the future, because he's certainly producing results!
