Yes, they will.

Also, qualifying for Junior Worlds this season will be a blood bath! Right now the three frontrunners for a spot seem to be Adelina Sotnikova, Elizaveta Tuktamisheva and Julia Lipnitskaia (Polina Shelepen will have to hope to qualify for Europeans). It's too early to tell, but can they sweep the podium?

I think that Adelina and Liza won't take part in JW. Their aim is to qualify to GPF on senior level

That doesn't mean they won't go to worlds. Even if they qualify for the final, they wouldn't want to finish the year there. Also, isn't there a youth winter olympics this year? One of them may go to that.

I think Liza and Adelina will go to JW because there's nowhere else they could go. A team of Sotnikova, Lipnitskaia and Tuktamysheva could sweep the podium.

My thoughts on the ladies:

Lipnitskaia: She skates with a poise, speed, and confidence that's unmatched by anyone else in this field. Fabulous. That said, I hate this program. I think she's musical, but I also think that the choreography does her no justice.

Miller: With that dress, I would've guessed Swan Lake! Love her. She's so musical. Even the spins seem to go with the music and she uses her arms so well! That said, she's totally tiny and her jumps don't seem all that technically sound. Lutz was definitely short.

Shershak: What's not to love? She's lacking the hard jumps, but what she does do is lovely. She is so smooth and elegant! Volchkova is quickly becoming one of my favorite coaches. I don't expect her to hang on to the podium, but I'd love it if she could. I hope she has a clean skate tomorrow.

Hicks: I think she has the potential to be quite interesting and voidy, but at this point, if the jumps don't work, nothing else does. It was a really flat skate. Also, that first leap into a spin is particularly ugly. Something about the way she holds her arms and her posture seem very old school.

Miyahara: She has zero tango flavor. I wonder if her coaches picked this music to make her seem older, but it has the opposite effect. I'm not sure if I agree with the deductions, though. But she rotates so quickly and her jumps are so small, that it's hard to tell. I don't find her skating very interesting at this point. She seems like a total fighter, though, and I can see her moving up a lot in the free.

Really great debut for Jay Yostanto.

Han Yan into first, as everyone predicted.

Solid performance from Jason Brown, who did not include his 3A.

Dmitriev 20 points below Han Yan. And less than 1 point behind him, a skater I never heard of from Brazil :party2:

Wow, Julia. That skate would be threatening to most senior Ladies. Her score would put her in 3rd in the boys' competition.

ISU actually has been posting the videos in almost real time. I saw Jason Brown's video before the competition was even over!

Anyway, wow to Julia. Too bad about Courtney. I hope she bounces back tomorrow!

.

I do like her, a lot in fact, but yeah for some reason I'm not sold on that program. Too much of those flex leg and catch foot moves. I get that you're flexible! Doesn't mean it's the best way to express your program!!

Mrs. P - I think it looks like a Rhythmic Gymnastics kind of choreography where it's flex leg catch, pose in an uncomfortable looking position, do something....

Exactly!

I also consider that she's doing Dark Eyes, I always think first of Sasha Cohen (who is very flexible) and Akiko Suzuki (who is not) so that's probably why this choreo drives me nuts -- because quite frankly I've seen it done much better!

And both programs came during the COP, we can't even use that excuse. Of course maybe it's a bit much to ask a junior program to match up to two senior programs...still as you say Julia is clearly musical, but it doesn't really show here.

I think some of you are too harsh towards Julia! She is 13 years old! Remember that Sasha and Akiko skated to this music when they were in their 20's.

I have to say, bravo Julia, prosta bravo! Fantastic skater! :D

She's definitely yet another bright prospect for the Russian ladies but, like all of the Russian ladies, she's in need of some better choreography. I think Polina Korobeynikova might have the best programs out of all of the new Russian girls. All of them need to be challenged with tougher choreography; only then will we see the artistic side begin to emerge.

But for someone so young, I don't hold it against her. I don't think it's impossible or harsh to expect a 13 year old with her skill level to have better programs, but I won't trash her for it.

Well, I thought of that. (hence my comment is it realistic to ask a junior skater to live up to a senior program). I do want to point out that I like Julia, she is going to rock the skating world if she stays on the same path as she is now. However, as MS and I both point out, we don't feel her choreography (which she didn't do!) doesn't really show her best features.

The fact that we're nit-picking her chroeo is an indication there isn't much else to be fussy about. =)

I like Polina K's choreo a lot, also. I think I like her and Hannah Miller because they flow from element to element. While Julia has programs jam packed with transitions, they are a bit jarring to me.

The lack of great choreo is surprising considering the strong Russian pairs tradition, which is ooooozzzing with amazing choreography.

Agreed. It sort of reminded me of CaroZ's programs when she was a Junior - do some sort of super-flexi move, do an element, and so on. I don't see exactly how it all flows together yet. She might get there, she might not. It would be a shame if she didn't live up to her potential.

Unfortunately, it often seems that the super-flexi skaters are the ones who suffer most during body changes of growing up with losing their technical skills, so she's on the wait and see list versus someone to go gaga over at 13.

I don't think my description is harsh, it's accurate. I say similar types of things to the kids I skate with regarding their choreography. One of the skaters I asked if his coach was in the habit of taking the entirety of Evan Lysacek's Olympic program and dropping it on top of different music without a 3A. He didn't even realize she had done that until I pointed it out...

Is it my imagination or is this event more of a splatfest than usual? Four flights of skaters with only one managing to stand up all the way through seems a bit unusual. (In advance of seeing protocols, I'm assuming the deductions are for falls, which is most likely.) Ice conditions? Lots of nerves? An army of risk-takers? Well, let's see what the top 6 have to offer....

Awww too bad, Jason Brown fell too. It look like the jump was fully rotated, it seem like a slipped edge or something. Good skate otherwise.

From the SP video Jason definitely looked like he had grown substantially taller. It was amazing how he skated like it didn't affect him.
