world/europeans medals: why are they so small?

i can't understand why worlds and euros medals are:
1.the same every year
2.so tiny!

what's the deal? why can't they change the medals according to venue and make nicer, bigger medals? i think this is the only sport that hands out the same medals over and over!

When they started giving prize money, the medals became small and unspectacular. It's been that way since the mid-90s.

I found a few old photos of medal podiums, but you couldn't get a good look at the medals. This is the best image I found: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/State-to-auction-unclaimed-property-1137805.php. It's Rosalynn Sumners' medals from 1983 Worlds. The small medals are for figures and free style. That's about the size of the regular medals now.
