Interesting that many top skaters are going this year. I believe many of them didn't go last year?

LADIES

1. There’s a couple of really interesting stories going on. The battle of the lone Canadians spot ends (?) here. Phaneuf has a stronger reputation with the international judges, but a spotty season and a coaching switch midway through means that you can’t rely on anything. Skate Canada is admittedly damned either way – I simply think that the ladies field is too broad to for Canada’s ladies to get that second spot. Oh well.

2. Alissa Czisny skipping 4CC is a HUGE surprise to me. However, that is a HUGE boost to Ashley Wagner. She could conceivably medal, and that would give her a boost in the eyes of the judges (worked for Duhamel/Radford last season, anyway). Should be fascinating to see if she pushes forward and continues cashing the cheques her mouth’s been writing.

3. No Suzuki means this is Mao’s to lose, though I’m very curious if Kanako Murakami can capitalize on her successful Nationals and score a silver.

4. Indeed, the lower registers, with Zhang, Zawadski, Phaneuf, LaCoste, Imai, and Kwak means this will be a pretty fascinating competition.

5. This is the last ISU event Zhang medalled at. Just sayin’

6. Should the podium echo the season best list, it’ll be:
  • Gold – Asada
  • Silver – Wagner
  • Bronze - Murakami

MEN

1. The world podium can come from countries represented here, and it still manages to feel a little bit of a disappointment without Kozuka and Hanyu (and Oda, out with injury). I have to admit I’m a little stymied by this decision. Machida and Mura definitely deserve more chances to show off their skills, but Hanyu and Kozuka need to be competing with the best.

2. So, does anyone else think that Abbott could overtake Takahashi here and use that momentum to capture silver or gold at worlds (cue pangtonfan’s derisive laughter)? I know, he sucks dealing with weighty expectation, or at least he has in the past, but I really do think that he can garner some major excitement here.

3. Nan Song is the spoiler – two quads, two triple axels. He’s already beaten Abbott in the long program once. He’s really come on strong this year and I think he could be a major, major surprise at Worlds (top five type surprise).

4. Rippon could threaten the top three/four. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Also, the last event he medalled. Just sayin’

5. I’m very curious about J. Ten’s return to competition. I think a 60/130 score is quite doable, and would be a solid return. Have no idea about Reynolds’ potential, truthfully. My dislike of his style clouds my judgement.

6. Should the podium echo the season’s best

  • Gold – Chan
  • Silver – Takahashi
  • Bronze - Abbott

To some skaters, such as Kostner, or Abbott, podium here may NOT be a good thing for world. Why? They choke at big event, especially with great expectation.

Surprise that no one is looking at Weaver/Poje. As much as I love the Shib Sibs, I will say that it will be a fight for bronze between those two pairs. Both had great performances at Nationals, so it's hard to say who will emerge to the bronze. I think W/P have some momentum, so I will go with them this time (though obviously I wouldn't be disappointed if the Shibs ended up there instead.

I usually don't make predictions. I just wanted to answer IP question about Abbot overtaking Dai. Yes I think Jeremy can. It will be interesting to see how the judges score Dai and Jeremy if they are both clean. I think it will be very, very close. Jeremy might have the advantage on TES and Dai the advantage on PC'S. Of course it all depends on which Dai and which Jeremy show up. I agree about Song he is the dark horse here. imo

I copied the list right from the 4CC website- sorry if she is actually entered. If she is not, I don't know why that is.

I meant why isn't she here at 4CC. I would have thought that they might give her a spot considering she is the Japanese #2. But I'm happy that they are giving Kanako another chance

Unless I am missing something it doesnt look like the Zhangs are even in the event (I think Duhamel & Radford would have beaten them anyway if they were).

The JSF typically uses 4CC for its lower ranked skaters to get more experience or skaters that are unable to go to Worlds. Last year Akiko went to 4CC instead of Kanako. So it makes sense for Haruka and Kanako to go instead of Akiko (who went to 4CC in 2009, 2010 and 2011).

Considering how completely off my predictions for nationals were, I shouldn't be trying this, but here goes...

Men

Chan (unless he completely blows up)
Takahashi
Abbott

Ladies

Asada
Murakami
Wagner (she seems to be having a really great season, and I expect it will continue)

Pairs

Duhamel/Radford (if they go clean)
Sui/Han
Takahashi/Tran (I expect the throws will let them down again)

Ice Dance

Virtue/Moir (If their SD goes well)
Davis/White
Weaver/Poje (assuming they stay on their feet, I see no reason why they shouldn't handily beat the Shibs)

Ladies:

Mao Asada
Kanako Murakami
Caroline Zhang

Caroline will need to finish as top U.S. lady here ( which she has done twice ) to regain some credibility. I figure most ISU judges haven't seen a 3loop/3loop in over a decade, so she might just squeek into the final freeskate group. That will provide a slight psychological boost with the judges over the lower ladies.

Men

Chan (unless he completely blows up)
Takahashi
Abbott

I don't know that a blow-up is necessary. Daisuke has finished in front of Patrick in the past. He may pull out a win here.
