Apart from Julia and Gracie, disappointing competition - a lot of flops (i.e. Adelina, Zijun, Risa, Polina, etc)

OUCH! Geez! What happen to Zijun Li?! 51.74? My goodness this is turning out to be a disappointing competition for my favs (Adelina and Zijun). :disapp:

Don't lose hope. There is still the long program to go. Zijun is only 1 point out of 4th and Adelina only 1.5 out of second.

Interesting that the poster above me feels this competition had a lot of flops. I think there was a lot of difficult content being attempted and more often than not, it was sounds like it was done well. I certainly don't consider Adelina's skate a flop.

ALLRIGHT, logged in to see my two faves are kicking booty (aka Gold & Sotnikova).  :points:

Now just waiting to see a youtube video of Adelina's skate, as I've already seen Gracie's magnificent one. :)^) Take that haters.

As for Lipnitskaya, no worries, she's only 13 (birthday June 5, 1998) and won't be going to Sochi because she's too young, so I don't care if she wins this junior thingie or not. :)

Lipnitskaya IS old enough for Sochi.

I'm still rooting for Adelina to win or come in 2nd behind Julia who's having a good season. I just can't get on the Gold train with her programs. I hope she steps it up next season.

Julia Lipnitskaya is age eligible for the 2014 Olympics. She was born just before the cut off point (which she made with just 25 days to spare!).

Yikes, your right! My eyes flip flopped there for a second.

Still, 13, she's got a loooooooooooooooooong road ahead of her in terms of puberty. ;)

From the youtube clips I've seen thus far, this was a well skated event, no falls, crashes, flops all over the ice like some have stated. Just a missed element or shaky landing is all. And to me that doesn't constitute a horrible flop of a competition. :disapp:

Here's to the 3/3s from the ladies! :hb:

According to the protocol, Adelina messed up 2 spins. A good thing she landed the jumps though.
Julia is simply phenomenal, I've never seen such a consistent skater!

Just saw the youtube of Adelina's skate. It's labored and sloppy and the choreo doesn't help. She looks nothing like the skater I saw at the JGPF in Beijing in 2010. And this program with its "modern" arrangement of that warhorse Bolero, like Gracie's techno-Sugar Plum Fairy, needs to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

ETA: Just saw the protocols. Sorry, but those jumps didn't deserve a +2 GOE. :rolleye: But definitely not a "flop" of a program. Shelepen on the other hand...from the video looked like a major brain fart on the lutz and then shaky on the 2A. For her, that constituted a "flop."

I decided to sleep in this morning so I missed the Ladies.
Congrats to Julia, Gracie and Adelina, looking forward to watching the videos.
Sheesh what happened to Polina?

Ahhhhh, just saw Miss Adelina Sotnikova's skate here: http://www.youtube.com/user/tamriko666#p/u/0/ZCSt73OB3SE

And I almost cried, she's so beautiful, this is my favorite program & costume of hers! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!  :party2:

Personally I would have had her in first. She's got everything, literally, everything. It gives me chills to watch her, so exquisite.

Can't wait for the FS...

Funny, I didn't find it that way at all. Aside from the spins, I thought it was a good skate:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCSt73OB3SE&feature=channel_video_title

Had her spins been better though, that would have taken her ahead of Gracie. She lost quite a lot on them and that was the difference. Another factor is that her favoured combination is a 3Zx3R, which she was not able to use here due to the rules this year in juniors (i.e. that the Lutz has to be the single jump). Hence, she had to deploy a 3Tx3T which has a lower base value than Gracie's combination. She lost 1.40 points on that just by itself. Combined, had she been able to use her preferred combination and had she done better with her spins, she would have come away with a score in the lower 60's.

Also, looking at the video of Adelina's performance, I actually think she was undermarked. What were the Judges looking at?? As you say, the only problem element was the spins and her PCS should have been a lot higher! Had she got the better PCS that she deserved, the taking the above factors into account, she would be neck and neck with Julia.

Julia is a kid and kids are often more consistent and less nervous than athletes / people in their late teens + adults. There are actual scientific studies that examined the physiological/neuropsychological changes during competition in tennis players, young adolescents (till 14 /15 years) and adults. The results clearly showed that most of the kids have none of the extreme reactions to the competitive stress adults tend to have. Puberty is not all about the different body, it's about self-doubt, intrinsic stress, over-thinking. Maybe that's the real puberty monster.

I know, you are right, but it still impressive to see a 13 year old holding it together so well and have that "attack" mood on the ice. I honestly don't love her skating but she has something about her that I can't take my eyes of her!
Not all young skaters react so well under the pressure. Neither Adelina or Liza had this level of consistency last year, their debut season. I know she is very very young and A LOT of things can change.

I can't believe we are all watching the same video of Adelina and coming to opposite conclusions?! The music is horrible choice for her, the choreography is awful, she looks leaden across the ice, her natural elegance (at least compared to what I saw LIVE last year) is suppressed. She certainly wasn't undermarked for this--I thought the judges were kind. And on top of it, her costume is ugly. I normally like this girl and the skating she is capable of, but this is just not the vehicle to play to her strengths, growth spurt or no.
