Well, the weird thing is that C/B are also listed for Nebelhorn Trophy and I doubt they would do two Challengers week by week. I hope that Shibs are listed as subs for Nepela and will be send there eventually. But Hubbell/Donohue are also listed for US Classic, IIRC, so there are two top US teams with two assignments and 0 for Shibs...

It's not a crazy concept -- Jason Brown's doing two Challenger events back-to-back with Lombardia last week and U.S. Classic this week. It seems odd the sparse assignments for Ice Dance when Men and Ladies have multiple assignments. I expect perhaps we'll see some additions soon. As long as a couple is listed as a sub, I think they can be added up to a certain point.

They are subs for both Ondrej Nepala and Finlandia.

I'm just wondering why they aren't listed outright.

They might be deciding which one they want to do.I remember Tarah Kayne saying something that even though they were listed for Nebelhorn Trophy they never intended to compete there -- and Lo and behold, they ended up at Finlandia. So maybe it's a similar situation.

I think it's actually more likely they will end up at Nepala. I find it hard to believe that every other team in the top 7 at Nationals and a newly-minted junior team got a senior B and the Shibs don't.

And even if they got feedback at Champs Camp, I find it hard to believe that there wasn't enough time between then (mid-August) and one of those later Challenger events to at least introduce it. They re-choreographed their SD in the 2012-2013 season between GPF and Nationals, which is about the same amount of time.

Maia and Alex are doing a "taking-over" of the US Olympic Team USA Snapchat account today.

So far it has at the rink. Would be exciting to see if they include them skating part of their programs!?

It looks like they're still keeping everything secret, though they did play a snippet of what I'm assuming is their SD music. It sounds like a remix they recreated of "That's Life" and Jay-Z. They seem to have a few random lines, one that I heard was "that's what you promised me" which is from the song "Never Change" but it looks like it's one of random lines from his other songs like "make some noise". I guess we'll just have to see.

It sounds amazing though! Did you like it?
I know that I'm now a hundred times more excited for Skate America! And it does really look like they might be doing hip-hop after all.

I'm not a music expert so I don't know much about proper music editing or how to make songs mesh well together, but from the little snippet they showed on Snapchat, it sounded really good.

Here's a link to the media teleconference that they held today:

http://web.icenetwork.com/video/v1206277383/?query=shibutani

For their SD hip hop rhythm, they talk about how they wanted to do hip hop and do a program that could be appreciated in and outside of the sport, and how got involved with Hokutu Konishi and Aye Hasegawa. They chose Jay-Z because they felt it worked with the music and how Jay-Z stated how Sinatra's music influenced his own and has mentioned Sinatra numerous times in his own music. They also listed a string of other dancers they worked with for the SD. Their Jay-Z piece isn't one you can "download on iTunes" and it's not a specific track as "That's Life" will remain a constant throughout the dance. Instead they customized and sampled a few Jay-Z pieces to go with it in the style of hip hop sampling. They hired a professional to do the music editing and Alex called the blues to hip hop transition "immersive". The idea was "if Frank Sinatra was still here today, what would a song collaboration between Sinatra and Jay-Z sound like?"

For their FD, they found their "beautiful" piece of music a few seasons ago and they think the piece reflects how they're "growing and changing". Alex calls it "captivating" and "emotional". He said the second half of their program is a piece that was performed for them by members of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and have been working on the arrangement since spring. They said the choreography was done by "a lot of people" including Peter Tchernyshev. Their decision was stemming from not wanting to be simply satisfied with resting on their results from last season.
They worked with Stephane Lambiel and Jeff Buttle on two different show programs in order to get another point-of-view of their skating.

As to why they didn't do the Challenger Series and instead are debuting their programs in the GP series, Alex and Maia felt this year with the timing of how their programs were developing (constantly getting feedback), they weren't ready until SA to debut them with confidence. I hope this was enough time...

They also said really great things about having Patrick Chan and Nathan Chen at the rink and how it's helped their own training and how they were inspired just by observing their skating.

Classy, smart, outspoken and bold. Hopefully more couples will follow their lead :) I haven't seen anything but I'm already positive about their choices.

I am worried with too many people involved, but I hope everything is well :slink:

That would usually worry me, but for some reason their teleconference eased my mind. I think they know what their weaknesses are and didn't like the fact that they lost to P/C in a big way. I think all the "cooks" are just people whose input would compliment and add on to their learning experience. What they want to do is work on things so that the gap between them and the gold closes, and better dancing and new types of movement would help with that.

Yes, they seem to be consulting with specialists to make every bit of their programs as good as they can make them. I like this video of choreographers Hok and Aye. The mix of hip hop with older style music may be something like what the Shibs are going for in the short dance.

Just finished watching the Shibs' run through. It wasn't a complete program, but from what they did give us...it sure is Hot! I was worried about the Hip Hop theme but they managed to blend it really well with the dance pattern. Skating to a Hip Hop mash up of That's Life, I hope it is well received by the fans and judges. Maia was smoking in a blinged out cat suit. One last thing before the ladies begin, they have the quietest blades of any team I have ever seen on the practice ice when the arena is empty.

Forgot to mention that the largest portion of the music is Frank Sinatra with the hip hop mashup towards the end.
