To become a JSF official at age of 30 is the youngest in the history of JSF, it says. Minoru Sano (age 57) is also appointed one of them, who is the very first Japanese skater ever to be medaled at the Worlds (in 1977). :yay:

Many many congratulations, Shizuka!

P.S. Is 'official' the right English word to translate '理事'???

I don't know-but "officials" is certainly one of the terms used for this sort of thing.

Of course everyone knows Shizuka, but Minoru Sano was a wonderful skater. Remember he skated during the era of figures, so your final finish was not always determined by your free skating ability.

Here with Japanese commentators:

Here with English commentary from ABC/Dick Button. Note that Minoru was 5th after figures & SP. Note that Dick is so on his side!:

He was first in the Free Program! And while skating in Tokyo, so much harder sometimes to excel at home.

Thanks for posting this and nice to hear this news about Shizuka - who remains as one of my all-time favorites.

Congratulations Shizuka! I love her, too, she is so smooth and feminine on ice.

How wonderful to hear! I don't know Sano's skating, but it sounds impressive. I do know that Shizuka is one of my favorites of all time, both for her competitive career and for her pro years, which I hope go on for a good long time. It's impressive the way she's held on to her technique, and her artistry has actually increased. I think she must have a certain amount of off-ice initiative as well, which will serve her well as an official: remember how she just got herself ready, gathered up supplies, and drove into the quake zone to bring relief to anyone she could help?

Deedee or anyone else who sees Japanese news media--can anyone give us extra background about Shizuka as a person? (Not private stuff, just the kind of thing I'd be able to learn from magazine articles if I knew Japanese.)

Edited to add: Oh, man, I just watched that program, the "Nessun Dorma." She is sublime, simply sublime. I realize that it's people like Shizuka who spoil me so I have trouble appreciating the new junior skaters. After you see this glorious artistic endeavor, it's hard to enjoy the possibilities of some coltish thirteen-year-old, even if she does have a quintuple axel landed in a headstand position.

Well deserved honour. She is a very special lady and champion who has contributed much to figure skating in Japan as well as the world.

I love Shizuka. Congrats to her. Her skating is still so beautiful. Flow, grace and beauty. And she still does all the CoP things like change of edges, difficult entrances to jumps or variations in the spins as if she was still competing.

Congratulations to Shizuka! She is such a beautiful person and a beautiful skater! I didn't know that she has leadership qualities until this news. That is indeed great!

Congrat to a beautiful skater. I can watch her doing xover all day long. Her skating is like "butta," like Paula Deen says.
