I second the Motion. This thread is a great idea! :)

Yes, it is a great idea!

These video threads may only have been going for a few competitions, but they are invaluable for people living in countries where figure skating is not broadcast, or where the broadcasts are not as comprehensive as they could (or should) be.

The only problem is that publicising these YouTube videos can have undesired side-affects. We have already seen our Lithuanian friend's "1990bestintheworld" account be cancelled by YouTube because of copyright infringement. And, unfortunately, I think our NHK Trophy video thread was the reason it was brought to the copyright-holder's attention. :frown:

Now, the Lithuanian has cancelled their "Bablados" account by themself. This has really annoyed me because I hadn't watched the full NHK gala coverage yet (I was planning to watch it this coming week after the competitions were over). And I was hoping to use their videos (when they were eventually uploaded) to fill in the gaps in Eurosport's coverage of the Finals (none of the competitions are being shown live on Eurosport, and we are only getting highlights for some of the competitions) :disapp:

So, these threads are a good idea in one way, but they can also be a bad idea in another

Because these two vids are from owners of the content, they should not disappear.

I also believe the RAI Sport 2 vids are from a semi-official channel, and they won't disappear.
Nikaquest has been posting Russian Eurosport vids for two years; clearly no one seems to want to take them down.

However, gala posts are risky, because music owners enforce their copyright on the music, and have videos taken down.
And full event videos are often taken down.

Just to confirm, the Universal Sports video is indeed geoblocked, but the CBC Sports video is not.

I don't know if it is possible, but I have just had a thought about one way to prevent the copyright holders reading our video links:

make the video threads accessible only when you sign in

OK, so this would annoy the many people that visit the forum but don't want to actually join. But, as Doris says, there are sources that are well-known and easy to find that have not been taken down. And, failing that, I suppose non-members can search through YouTube themselves.

It's only a suggestion. Personally, I would prefer if as many skating fans as possible were helped to watch the performances. But, in these days of copyright protection, limiting access to these discussions would help prevent this happening again.

I don't think we would do that. Right now, using GS as open access to these links, we are relying on youtubes copyright protection methods & policies.

People are entitled to protect their copyrights to material.

I don't think we would do that.

You know, I am kinda glad you said that. Although I was the one that brought up the suggestion, I don't really agree with limiting access to certain parts of the forum. (I even hinted at that in the closing paragraph of my previous comment). I just wanted to put the idea out there to see what other members (and moderators) thought about it.

People are entitled to protect their copyrights to material.

Of course they are. It's just that videos disappearing because of copyright claims is a pain in the backside for those of us that are not getting as full a TV coverage as we would wish for (and that others are getting...!)

Let's face it, if we were getting better coverage on the TV, there would be no need for looking up videos on the internet.

So, instead of relying on videos on the internet, perhaps we should be letting the TV companies know just how many of us want coverage of figure skating competitions in full.

It probably wouldn't make much difference, but you never know! ;)
