Way to jump on this overcrowded bandwagon a week too late! This is emblematic of figure skating's problems in the mainstream: the people steering it are so unhip, yet desperate to be otherwise.

OK, I get it: some of you hate the dance, hate the video, etc. No need then for you to post again in this thread, right? ;)

In case Team Shpilband remains of any general interest (unrelated to the video) to anyone, here is a link to IN's photo gallery of their pre-Worlds send-off show:

11 photos, mostly of individual performances of programs: e.g., Chock/Bates, Cappellini/Lanotte, Tobias/Stagniunas, Carron/Jones, etc.
Bazarova/Larionov are guest skaters at the Novi rink.

Heck, if youngin's wanna go out there and blow off steam, thats fine. Personally, I liked the "Call me Maybe" vid by the Shibs....

I think it was interesting that Igor actually performed on ice during the Harlem Shake.

I see Carron & Jones FRA & Bazarova & Larionov (pairs RUS) were there. Are C&J doing some tech brush up with Igor?

And what were B&L doing in Novi??? It seems kind of early to be there pre-Worlds.

Hi, Doris,
In hindsight, I wish that instead of starting a new thread, I had hunted down the old Shpilband news thread and simply posted the H.S. video there. Would it make sense to merge this thread into that one?
Or ... might you want to change my original title for this thread to something more inclusive of all things Shpilband? I would hate for someone who couldn't care less about the H.S. to miss your link to program videos.
(Not trying to tell you what to do. Just my two cents.)
Thanks

I chose to change the title...

And I added links to the performances other than Harlem Shake.

Hey, what's up? I wanted to talk about the Harlem shake.

Here is what I found out about it, from that vanguard of cutting edge culture, the New York Times. :)

This dance originated in 1980 on the pick-up basketball courts of Harlem. I think the original idea was that when you made a shot over your opponent's lame so-called defense, then you did a little shake in his face. An entertainer named Al B (or Sysco) started doing it as entertainment during breaks in the action at outdoor basketball games. By the early 90s the dance became popular in music videos. In 2013 for some reason white people started doing it. ;)

Thanks for always being the life of the GS party, MM. :party2: :)

And thank you for the bkgd on the Harlem Shake. I do remember its 15 minutes of mainstream popularity that came and went many years ago, and have been amused that some who have "discovered" it in 2013 believe that it is utterly new.

BTW, Nightline aired a story last night about the longevity of the current H.S. craze. (The video is 2:59 in length.)

And CBS This Morning had a H.S. story this morning -- at 8:37 am, according to its rundown.

1:48 in length.
Topic: "The Harlem Shake is heading for its third week atop the billboard hot 100 and marketers are trying to cash in."
