LONDON, Ontario – You come to the world figure skating championships 11 months before the Winter Olympic Games to find them. They're out there on the ice somewhere, next year's gold medalists in the sports' four disciplines: women, men, pairs and dance.

More Brennan Russians don't really have any talent in skating just good politics. No win was ever really deserved by the athletes but a triumph or politics. Moskvina is a great politician and all Russian judges are corrupt so that's where the wins are from. She is all about making any win by a Russian in Sochi illegitimate.

Russia may not be left out of the cold in Russia but in London they may be making frends with the eskimos. The ladies were horrifiic. Two didn't even make the last two flight. Liza and the world silver medallist are no where to be seen. It would take a miracle or a meltdown for them to earn three spots. And in pairs, they look very flat. ice dance will be tough to get onto the podium they have to hold off CL from Italy and move ahead of P and B who have experience and world bronze. And in men they are finished 19th and they thought Gatchinki was bad - better pull a Kevin Reynolds

So true- this article about Russians being corrupt and putting all their skaters in good position for wins and then the ladies all bomb their short programs and one barely makes the top 10. Have to believe the toxic environment for Russians in north america affects some. It's an extremely hostile environment filled with hatred.

This stuff is even more prevalent at the national level, where skaters like Rachel and Agnes get inexplicably high marks for so-so skates.

Russia will win 1 gold medal at the Games- Volosozhar & Trankov. That is it. They are definitely not winning any of the other 3 events. They have a shot at a possible bronze in ladies, dance (maybe silver if V&M have a bad event), and a real remote chance at the bronze in mens if Plushenko makes a startingly strong comeback, but no golds. Kavaguti & Smirnov arent winning a gold medal, that is for sure.

Well, if that's the case, the Russian Federation could choose not to send skaters to competitions in North America. Or the skaters themselves could decline to attend and let the next person in line have the place on the team. Surely Menshov or Makarova or somebody wouldn't mind skating in "N. America Hell" ?

Well said. While I didn't agree with you on Leonova issue, I really appreciate this.

Aren't the CAs and AMs even more skillful at 'playing' these games?

Soviet Union was as corrupt as it gets in figure skating. All Soviet judges had to be banned for a year back in the late 70's because they were so corrupt. As far as i'm concerned when your banned your banned for life. A zebra doesn't change it's spots.

Every country lobbies for their skaters. We sometimes forget that in SLC France was just as much to blame as Russia in the vote swapping scandal. The US tries to do things behind the scenes as well but it's harder when your country doesn't break up into smaller countries that each get a vote on a judging panel.

if Kavaguti & Smirnov had a prayer of winning in Sochi (aka they dont) she would have a possible opportunity to spin her Moskinva angle into a false corruption story. Unfortunately for her the Russian gold in that event will come from Voloszhar & Trankov, not Kavaguti & Smirnov, and barring an unusually poor skate they will be clear and uncontested winners, thus giving her no possible angle to manipulate a story from. In the unlikely event they somehow surprise by winning the womens gold (highly unlikely IMO but that is looking like the most open of the 4 events at the moment) it will only be because Sotnikova or Tuktamysheva skated lights out and clearly deserved out, almost certainly over flawed performances by Kim and Kostner. There is no chance of them being gifted the gold in suspiciious there with a relative newbie over veteran stars who are well beloved by judges. I think that is essentialy Brennan is an old washed up hag of a journalist and desperately needs any storyline. She even tried writing about Tonya Harding at the Nationals 2 years ago out of the blue, pathetic. Time to put the old cow out to the pasture with some manure and hay.
