http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFAsNpBJbk0 Matt Savoie 2005. He is a true poet on the ice. He is married and is a lawyer now. I wish him the best. I have never seen anyone whose skating is so transcendent that I kept repeating to myself it is pure poetry. Incidentally, Lysacek got a higher placement than Savoie, despite Lysacek having a similar jump content as well as skating to the painfully familiar and cliched staple skating music.

Great call! He was a definitely a poet on the ice. This is my favorite Savoie performance from the 2006 U.S. Nationals:

Stunning! A dream!

Matt's exquisite style brought to mind another one of my all time favorite (and often mentioned) performances: Paul Wylie's 1992 Olympic LP:

Matt was subtle and sensitive. Paul was dramatic and had a mathematical precision of line. They were definitely artists, rather than just being artistic.

BlackPack, it was such a privilege to be in the arena for Matt's performances in 2005 and 2006.

I imagine it must have been extraordinary to see... was Matt a very fast skater? How did his speed compare to the other men?

Your descriptions of both skaters are apt.

Matt was not a "fast" skater, in the "out of control" mode that passes for "speed", now.
However his speed was appropriate to the tempo and mood required by the program he was doing.
He certainly wasn't "slow"; or lacking power.
