Karne, do you coach skaters in your local area? I'm impressed by all your technical knowledge (and jealous you got to watch Brandon and Chantelle live!)

Senior Men!

Now this ended up with a story to tell. We got through the first group fine. Then the second group came on to warm up. Everyone was , Mark Webster and Brendan Kerry started playing triple Axel psychological warfare...off comes the warmup, and Maverick Eguia is to go first. Hang on, we're told, just got to fix a computer glitch. Watch someone running around plugging wires and suddenly...VOOOOOOM - NO POWER! Just some small emergency type lights.

This is how dark it was

Maverick's stranded on the ice, no-one's quite sure what's going on, so at first he hams it up for the crowd and starts doing jumps in the half-light in front of them. But then the referee tells him to hop off, it's much more serious than first thought.

After a while we all start wandering outside in quest of heat and that's when the news comes through... 60,000 homes across Western Sydney are without power. And it's peak hour. And all the traffic lights are out. And the M5 tunnel, too. Wow. Oh no, thinks me. This'll take HOURS...

To give AusGrid their credit, the power was only gone for an hour. We then waited another 45 minutes so they could reboot the computers and rezamboni the ice, put the warmup group back on to warm up again, and away we go.

1st Brendan Kerry (AUS) - in a very gorgeous soft blue shirt, suspenders, tie, and pinstripe pants - 3F, 3A gorgeous, 3Lz, StSq, CCSp, 3A-3T huge!, 2Lz, 2Lo, CCoSp, 3S, 1A-2A SEQ, ChSq, FCSSp, just fabulous, didn't go all out but didn't need to, gorgeous lines and movement, fantastic jumps, and a 192 total which is freaking amazing.

2nd David Kranjec (AUS) - in another very Gachinski-esque costume, I think he was supposed to be a demon, but not sure - 2A, 2F-3T turnout, 3Lo turn-2T, FCCoSp, 3Lo, 2F, 2A, StSq, 3S-2T, 3T, CCoSp, ChSq, FSSp, STUNNING lines and movement, absolutely gorgeous, I was literally drooling.

3rd Julian Yee (MAS) - In a fantastically simple black velvet top with silver sparkles over one shoulder and black pants. Mission Impossible - FCSp, 2A-2T-2T<, 3S-2T, 3F turnout, CSSp GREAT!, 2Lz, StSq, 3F-2T, 3S, 3T, 2A, CCoSp, ChSq, fantastic performance, gorgeous skater, really soft nice stroking and carriage, great lines.

4th Mark Webster (AUS) - Gershwin in a gorgeous black velvet waist coat over blue shirt, with blue sparkles on the coat - 3A< fall, 3T, 2Lo, CSp, StSq, 3F turn-3T< step, FSSp, 3F< fall, 3S, 3S-3T, ChSq, 2A, CCoSp, and he's not happy at all to have lost the triple Axel battle. Really nice skate in parts but just got a bit desperate.

5th Maverick Eguia (PHI) - crowd favourite after the blackout! - 3Lo, 3Lz, 3F, FCSp, 2F-2T, CCoSp, StSq fantastic, 3Lz< fall, 2A, 2A-1T 2ft, 3S, CUSp nice position, ChSq fantastic, heaps of promise, great fun to watch.

6th Andrew Dodds (AUS) - brother vs brother round two, lovely black velvet onesie with different coloured squiggles at the collar, wrists and legs - 3F< fall, 2A, 3T, FCCoSp, 2Lz, CSSp, StSq, 2F, 3S-2T hand down, 2A, 3Lz<< fall, ChSq, CCoSp can't grab the foot for donut yikes. Nice program.

7th Jordan Dodds (AUS) - in the best costume of the night IMO, all-black onesie with a dark purple inserted sash and a few sparkles on the front and his forearms - 3T< 2ft, 3Lo hand down, 1Lz, 2A-2T just stunning, FCCoSP, 2T, StSq, 3S-2T-2T, FCSSp, ChSq, 3S, 2A 2ft, CCoSp, lovely lines and extensions but not on it tonight.

8th Harry Lee (HKG) - 3F< hand, 3S-2T, 2A, StSq, CSSp, 3T-2T, 2T, 3S, FCSp, ChSq, 2A, 1F, CCoSp, dinner arrived during his skate so I was kinda distracted, but a very promising skater.

9th Kwun Hung Leung (HKG) - in a droopy velvet top that actually suited quite well - 2A< 2ft, 3S step, FCCSp, StSq, 2Lo, FCCoSp, 2T-3T<<, ChSq, 1A-2T-1Lo, 2S-1T, Rippon 2Lz GORGEOUS, 2F, CCoSp, flashes of brilliance, watch out for this one.

Senior Ladies:

As a preamble, I don't know whether it was the fact that we were two hours behind schedule or what, but the ladies were...not very clean.

1st Chantelle Kerry (AUS) - 3T< hand-2t, 3S nice, CCoSp, 3Lo turn-2T-2T 2ft, 2T, StSq, 1A oops, CUSp, ChSq, 1Lo 2ft, 2A-2T, FCCoSp, very pretty, good lines, lovely movement.

2nd Sumika Yamada (HKG) - 2A hand, 3S turn-2T, 2F<< 2ft, 2Lo-1T-1T, 2A<< 2ft, LSp, StSq, 2Lo, CCoSp. Great skater with loads of potential.

3rd Clara Peters (IRL) - in a lovely grey dress with long gloves! - FSSp, 2A, 3S< fall, 3Lo, LSp lovely, StSq, 3S< 2ft, 2A, 2F-2T, ChSq, 1Lz, CCoSp, lovely program, nice lines and energy.

4th Jaimee Nobbs (AUS) - 2Lo, 2A, 2S, CCoSp, 2Lo, 2F, 1A, LSp, StSq no energy, FCCoSp, 2F-1T, ChSq. No energy at all, very flat all the way through. Skater looked disinterested.

Senior Dance

Ah! The one we'd all been waiting for. The crowd got bigger. And noisier. And there were TV cameras. You know, big time stuff.

1st Danielle O'Brien/Gregory Merriman (AUS) - Circus number in bright clown colours - Twizzles great, curve lift nice, rotational lift GASP GURGLE WOW, steps fabulous, PCCoSp great positions, another nice lift, more steps that I don't understand what's going on but it's great anyway, circular steps with loads of energy, rotational lift to finish, tons of energy and character and loads of fun.

2nd Romana Elsener/Florian Roost (SWI) - Tango de Roxanne, her dress is STUNNING let me tell you - twizzles fantastic, curve lift very smooth, holding steps very sync, PCCoSp nice positions, a series of three very gorgeous lifts, more steps I don't understand, rotational lift to finish and uh-oh the music has glitched and cut out early. Massimo Scali is very scary when he's angry. Run away. Romana and Florian took it very well and finished properly.

3rd Ayesha Campbell/Shane Speden (NZL) - "Bleeding Love" by Adele - Rotational lift lovely to start, twizzles nice, steps right to the beat, a nice lift that wobbled slightly but he held it, PCCoSp nice, another nice rotational lift, circular steps to the faster beat great!, diagonal lift and WHOA he nearly lost it in his besti squat but somehow and IDK how he has saved himself AND kept her in her lovely position! Gorgeous program, this couple has improved miles from the last time I saw them in June, they are working really hard.

4th Katherin Firkin/Henri Dupont (AUS) - Elton John mix including Crocodile Rock and Sacrifice...very disjointed music - lift wobbly, twizzles he fell out, curve lift nice but simple, PCCoSp okay, very slow steps to a faster beat not working, lift again, not bad, rotational lift to finish. Disjointed music and disjointed sloppy skating unfortunately. Nice in parts.

So that's my notes from the comp. By now everyone was exhausted because we were two hours late. Danielle and Gregory had a longer task to come; they spent about an hour after that doing interviews and photos and camera shots. I took this opportunity to go fangirly and got photos with Brendan (very polite), David (very very polite and such a tiny waist!), Clara (so graceful and nice!), Julian (who was very surprised but I really loved his program!), three of the Dodds boys (Jordan, Andrew and Matthew) who were all very graceful and polite even though they were all very tired (and their mum is so nice!), AND Danielle and Greg after they finished their long photoshoot. They were also really nice!

Australian male skaters all seem to be very handsome!

I don't. I'm just a low-level skater myself, but I do some data entry so listen in to the tech specialists, and well, I just love all the technical stuff!
