For those who remember last year's competition, the University of Utah will be playing another football game at home that weekend - Oregon State. The tailgate party surrounds Steiner (local name for the skating rink). Last year the tailgate madness was a definite plus for the skating competition. The skaters walked around in the sun and enjoyed all the partying. Some of the skaters went golfing locally and one or two went to the football game. Also, a few of the tailgaters came in out of the heat for the skating. I'm sure the local organizing committee will try to increase the crossover opportunities this year.

If Evan comes, he should have a great time.

Does anyone know why the number of spots is so low? Senior B's usually have a lot more slots than 10 for dance, if they hold a dance competition at all.

U.S. Team announced: https://www.usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=49391&type=media
Ladies: Samantha Cesario; Gracie Gold; Courtney Hicks; Agnes Zawadzki
Men's: Max Aaron; Stephen Carriere; Joshua Farris; Evan Lysacek
Pairs: Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir; Caydee Denney and John Coughlin; Tarah Kayne and Daniel O'Shea; Felicia Zhang and Nate Bartholomay
Ice Dancing: Anastasia Cannuscio and Colin McManus; Meryl Davis and Charlie White; Lynn Kriengkrairut and Logan Giulietti-Schmitt; Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani

Some interesting things to note:

** With just 10 entries, U.S Entries would take up 40 percent! Pretty good odds for U.S. sweep.
** Davis and White competing! They did do Nebelhorn in 2009, so perhaps this isn't surprising.
** Interesting that 3/4 National champs are competing here; and at least half of the medalists at Nationals are doing so as well.
** Wondering why Ashley Wagner opted not to compete here?

Not sure what you're saying, Mrs. P?
No question that Team USA is sending some of its best.
But see below for the maximum number of entries per discipline. Dance has a max. of ten, but the numbers are different for singles and pairs.

I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm excited to see the whole roster and I wonder what the line-up will be for the Challenge skate.

I meant for Ice Dance. The max entries is 10. There are 4 us entries, so 40 percent of the entries are from the U.S.

Sure, if you had indicated that you meant only Ice Dance, then the arithmetic is obvious. ;)
Just wanted to clarify that the same numbers and percentages do not apply across the board for all four disciplines.

Exciting that no less than Davis/White are jumping on the SLC bandwagon in this Olympic season, but I wish that the press release had given Aaron and Zawadzki an additional shout-out as the 2012 U.S. Classic champions who will be back to defend their titles.

Also interesting is that Chock/Bates (who placed fourth last year) and Miner (third last year) are not returning.

A deep roster of US competitors is a wise (and obvious) move by USFS to make the profile of this event relevant. Especially in an Olympic year, it is an advantage for skaters to get competitive exposure with international judges without having to travel far. I believe prior to this events' inauguration, there was no Senior B in North America. The US roster looks a lot like the team headed to Skate America, so the timing of this event (early in the Senior B calendar) mirrors the timing of the Grand Prixs (Skate America being the first) so that also makes sense from a training perspective. Feedback from an event too close to the Grand Prixs gets harder to incorporate. Ross Miner for instance will not compete until later in the Grand Prix series so it is probably possible for him to compete at a Senior B event later in the Senior B calendar and still have it be useful for him.

Well, this is the end of Lysacek's comeback. He won't like being squashed by Aaron as it is; but to be beaten by Farris as well won't do his rep any good.

I think it's mostly because of the fact that Nebelhorn is very close to this competition. With Nebelhorn being so important for the Olympic spots, people are opting to do competitions closer to home (and mostly farther from Nebelhorn's date) to prepare instead of wasting stamina I suppose.

My theory is that it has been decided that lysacek can do quads and 3a and get much higher pcs than aAron. That the only reason why quads were a problem was because of stress fracture but before the stress fracture it was so stressful sealing with threat if zero points if ur fall.

Lysacek's PCS won't do jack squat if he's only doing two quads total and Aaron turns up with FIVE. The TES difference alone will kill it unless they give ol' flail-arms Chan-like PCS.

Last year's competition in Salt Lake turned out to be quite good luck for a lot of skaters - especially Max Aaron. That said - EVERY program looked ragged. It was the beginning of the year and not one program looked ready for Nationals or Worlds. To expect Max to do 5 quads or Evan to look polished is probably not realistic. It will only be a beginning.

Aww.. No Ashley Cain
Ladies: Samantha Cesario; Gracie Gold; Courtney Hicks; Agnes Zawadzki - 2,3,4 places at Nationals, 4, 5 places at JrWorlds, all four are medalists of JGP or GP Events at 2012.

What comparable did Ashley Cain in 2012/2013 season?
Yes, Samantha was 8th at Nationals, but she was 4th (1st of US) at JrWorlds.
Ashley was 12th at Nationals.

I see, USFS thinks that Senior B's must be deserved, as JGP Events and ISU Championships.

This. The Classic will still be more than a month before the first GP event, so I don't expect to see many (if any) perfectly polished programs. It's a small enough competition, albeit an international one, that the skaters won't feel lazy/unprepared for showing up with works-in-progress. If anything, this event is a way to test programs and to set up a rough roadmap of what to expect on the GP, at Nationals, and hopefully at the Olympics.
