Where Are They Now? Ask and Get Answers about skaters you've lost track of!

I want to know about

Skaters I Loved and Haven't Heard Anything About or Seen Skate in a While:

Katarina Witt
Paul Wylie
Victor Petrenko
Oskana Baiul

Skaters I Liked and Hear Nothing About Anymore:

Caryn Kadavy
Rosalyn Sumners
Elizabeth Manley
Peggy Fleming- does she do any commentary??

Skaters I Didn't Love But Still Wonder What Happened to Them:

Philippe Candeloro
Alexei Urmanov

My all-time favorites Brian Boitano, Katia Gordeeva, Dick Button, Michelle Kwan, Shen and Zhao, and Kurt Browning I feel pretty well informed about. :)

Katarina Witt was featured in a special about E. German sports recently. It aired on ESPN and was called "The Diplomat" Katarina, Frau Mueller her coach, and Frau Mueller's daughter, who was also a World champion figure skater, Christina Errath, all were interviewed, as was Ingo Steuer.

Katarina still looks fabulous!

Phillippe Candeloro sometimes does commentary on French Eurosport. He did not particularly impress me as a commentator.
He skated his farewell tour in France in 2008..

from his wiki
Candeloro is married to ballet dancer Olivia Darmon,[4] with whom he has three daughters: Luna Nizza, Maya Estella and Thalia Soleya. He was introduced to Olivia by the choreographer of his 1994 Olympic program, Natasha Dabadie

When I went to Evening With Champions (the Harvard benefit for the Jimmy Fund), Paul Wylie was the emcee and even skated a bit.

OOH Doris, I want to see this movie! wonder if it will be on Netflix or Amazon streaming. I love Katarina. Even though I rooted for Debi T in 88 because she was American, how can anyone not respect Katarina for her longevity, ability to deliver under pressure, and her wonderful professional career. I am still so proud of her for her 94 comeback and thought her Robin Hood program was great and her Where Have All the Flowers Gone program beautiful, haunting, spiritual. interesting that she has never married or had kids.

Happy to hear Philippe got married and had daughters! I know Paul Wylie has a lot of kids too, is born-again-Christian, and working in business, I think? I am glad to hear he still skates. What a stunning skater he was.

Here's an interview from last year with Victor Petrenko.

an excerpt
Countless competitions and numerous medals later, after World and Olympic triumphs in Oakland (CA) and Albertville (France), 20 years of touring professionally with the U.S. company Champions on Ice, and a relocation with his loved ones to the U.S. in 1994, after reaching the pinnacle of international competition, we find Petrenko in a skating paradise: the four-rink complex of The Ice House in Hackensack, NJ.

Now a busy elite figure skating coach, as well as an International Skating Union (ISU) technical specialist, he trains, alongside Zmievskaya and wife Nina (Zmievskaya’s daughter), emerging talent, and Olympic potential of all nationalities. His current students include 2011 Skate America and 2010 Czech national champion Michal Brezina, two-time Ukrainian national champion Natalia Popova, and American figure skater and three-time U.S. national champion Johnny Weir, .

I've heard bits and pieces of some of the skaters you mentioned:

Paul Wylie was at the Gardens Ice House outside of DC just this past weekend, giving a skating seminar at the rink, and made a brief appearance at the Michael Weiss show that was being held there at the same time (they hadn't realized that both had been planned for the same weekend!). He's given seminars at other rinks around the country and hosts the Harvard skating show every year, recently sharing the duties with Emily Hughes. They're both Harvard alums, and I believe Paul went back for his MBA some years back.

Victor Petrenko coaches along with his wife Nina and Galina Z. based out of Hackensack in NJ. I remember seeing him at the boards of an up and coming skater awhile back. Perhaps someone else might know who his most promising students are.

Caryn Kadavy was interviewed by the Manleywoman Skatecast this summer - I haven't listened to it, but I imagine there would be updates there about what she's up to these days.

Philippe Candeloro is still active in the skating world. He attended Worlds when they were in Nice last year, was a contestant on the French version of Dancing with the Stars, still skates in shows, and as mentioned above, does some skating commentary and interviews for skating events on French television. I read an interview he gave around the time of Worlds and was a bit surprised by how brutally honest he was. He competed at the Medal Winners Open at the beginning of last fall in Japan and did a version of his D'Artagnan long program.

Alexei Urmanov is coaching. He does summer clinics, one in Sweden that was attended by Brian Joubert a few summers ago. Joubert mentioned being very impressed by Urmanov and the fact that he could still do everything that he was teaching and had kept up his skating technique even so many years after he won the Olympics.

I LOVED this interview with Victor! So glad he is doing well and thriving. and what a generous, compassionate, kind person he is. I loved him as a skater- the huge jumps! the flair and charisma!- although I agree that his long program in the 92 Olympics was a little weak. I also loved him as a mentor to Oksana and as a dear friend of G & G- walking in the front of that funeral procession carrying Sergei's photo, his touching quotes in My Sergei. How wonderful to find out that he is still married, coaching, still with Galina, and still doing good in the world!

Thank you so much, Victura! I'm very grateful to you for sharing. I see you are a big G & G fan like I am. I just showed my new husband the World Pro performance of Vocalise tonight!

You're newly married? Congratulations. :) I always thought "new husband" was such an odd/funny expression - well, my formerly "new" husband is now my "old" husband (we've been married over 20 years) - so long life and happiness to you both! And you're interesting him in figure skating? Well done! :)

I took my daughter to Micheal Weiss's show over the weekend. As mentioned above, Paul Wylie made a brief appearance. Brian Boitano and Katia Gordeeva were scheduled skaters.

It's great to hear about all these skaters. I also have a special fondness for Petrenko, even though he wasn't one of my top faves in terms of his skating. (I admired it but loved Browning and Wylie better.) As a man, Viktor takes the gold medal. He's been active in funding children's health care in the Ukraine, for example. (Remember, Chernobyl is in the Ukraine, and many children were affected.) His many other kindnesses through the years are inspiring. I'm also glad to hear about Urmanov. I love that he can still do all the things he teaches.

Thanks for starting this thread!

Paul was involved in the Franklin Graham Ministries a few years back, I think he still works with them. He helped create a Children's Ministry program.

I'm new to the forum, but was interested in this thread and responses! I saw The Diplomat; very interesting perspectives. Does anyone know what's going on with Caitlin Yankowskas? Haven't heard anything since spring (after split with Joshua Reagan)

Yes! :) Well, we got married about a year ago. Second marriage and blended family- I have two boys and he has a girl. My boys are big figure skating fans as is their father, my lovely ex-husband, but my new husband is a newbie and needs to be converted. I thought starting with G & G would be a good idea! I tell him his education in preparation for the Olympics is beginning!

You're so welcome, Olympia! and I *completely* share your sentiments about Petrenko. He is a man with a heart of gold as well as an Olympic gold medal.

Congratulations on your new family! I'm sure your new hubby will thank you for his education in skating. (As he's sitting biting his nails with anxiety on the nights of the various Long Programs in Sochi.)

I read a few years ago that Holly Cook married and is raising a family and is (IIRC) coaching skaters in her home rink in Utah.

!!! :) !!! That's exactly what I want- to make him care so much that he is as on edge as I am! He's already a fan of Meryl and Charlie- I showed him a few of their programs last year.

Rosalyn Sumners gave her last pro performance in 2006. At that time a Seattle paper did a long interview with her
http://www.seattlepi.com/sports/article/Where-Are-They-Now-Rosalynn-Sumners-1984-1195143.php

The short version is that she is very well to do

Sumners lent three of her world figure skating medals to an Edmonds bank for display in 1984. When she returned to pick them up, the bank had changed ownership, and no one knew where the medals had been stored. They were lost for 20 years, but discovered as unclaimed property in a safe deposit box and returned to Sumners (with a mock "awards" ceremony) by the state of Washington in 2004.

On April 24, 2004 she married IMG vice president Bob Kain.

In 2012, she helped out with a benefit at her old rink
