It looks like the judges are too strict or stingy. The competition should be better than the scores. Some of the favorites (Kato, Sakamoto) and hopefuls (Honda, Higuchi) were rather disappointing. Hope them to move up with a vengeance.

Wow Mariko Kihara! I really like Yokoi so too bad about her score and Haruna Suzuki is one of my old favorites so I keep hoping she'll get better so it's a shame she didn't even make it to the free. I really do hope Kato, Sakamoto, Honda and Higuchi can move up in he free!

This time, Hongo was the one who got special favors from the judges. After all this competition is in Nagoya. I'm relieved to see Matsuda didn't win. The winner is promised to be chosen for junior worlds. Nice comebacks from Kato, Higuchi and Marin (2nd in the FS).

Thanks for the results! I really hope Kato can get it together at sr nats and get to Jr worlds. But I wonder if Miyahara doesn't finish in the top three might they send her to jr worlds again? I'm sad Yamamoto did so horribly in his FS. Maybe he couldn't recover well after his first fall or he was stressed because he placed so well in the SP, he's still very young but I hope he's able to have a better performance in sr nats as well. Yokoi didn't place so well but her content looks really good, she just needs to keep working at it and maybe next year will be better.

I hope the Ice Dance teams get sent to Junior Worlds and international competitions. The ID program will never take off unless teams are given opportunities and are enabled to gain competitive experience.

Absolutely agree. I'm hoping that the Japanese Federation will be more interested in creating junior pairs & ice dance programs, now that there is an Olympic team event. Since it is so difficult to obtain Japanese citizenship, practically, the federation should be encouraging teams composed of two Japanese citizens who train in Japan to develop.

Gone are the days when the fed trades a van for a male Russian pair skater.

Two years ago (IIRC), they held a big tryout for Ice Dance and Pair teams so it's definitely on their radar. Hopefully they are going to put more resources into developing those disciplines now.

I can't recall their names now but the Japanese ID team who trained with Linichuk work as ID coaches in the country now, I think. Also maybe Kenji Miyamoto would be interested in coaching dancers in addition to doing choreography?

Yes, something like two seasons ago maybe I remember Watanabe and Kido listed as the coaches of one Japanese junior ID team.

They were quite adorable as competitors, I liked them also. :)

Here is Marin Honda's 2nd place FS: http://youtu.be/8Ie-fcsAGZ4. Lovely program and great comeback for her! Is there a reason she can't compete in seniors? She did finish in the top 5. I assume it's because she was a novice who moved up to juniors.

Thanks for the links. Wakaba looked really good at novice nats. The novice winner for the boys was super cute too haha. Interesting to see Kihara for the first time, I think she could go far if she manages to get the flip and the lutz but of course that's easier said than done, I hope she does well enough to get spots in the JGP next season. Mihara looked really good. In the past I always compared her to Kaori and I thought Kaori was a bit better but she really laid it down in the FS, looking forward to seeing them both (and Kato) at senior nats.
