There's going to be so many fun photos, tweets and other posts, I think it's good if we have such a thread

Loved this twitter conversation between Michelle Kwan and Lolo Jones:

Love this story on Polina Edmunds from the local Bay Area NBC affiliate!

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/loca...-Gold-and-As-in-Sochi-Olympics-242446401.html

“I definitely still have to do schoolwork,” Polina told NBC Bay Area last week. “I don’t know exactly how it’s going to work yet, but I’m probably going to be taking a lot of work with me and checking online when I’m there.”

Polina’s teachers want her to keep up with her studies, but they also realize that traveling to Russia – the birth country of her mother, who also doubles as her skating coach – is a teachable moment in itself.

“I want her to find someone who speaks Spanish, an athlete, a coach or whoever and interview them,” said Leslie Zambo, Polina’s Spanish teacher. “I want her to come up with the questions and talk to the class about her experiences. Her classmates would just love it.”

I love that Polina's very low-key attitude toward all this. She has a very cool and collected demeanor that I appreciate. It's a interesting complement to Jason Brown's infectious enthusiasm!

Thanks for starting this thread, Mrs. P. :)

At the risk of being Debbie Downer, I really wanted to share the following tweet.
As excited as we all are for the Olympians, also deserving of our support are many fine athletes who will not have the opportunity to compete in Sochi .

So much goes into preparing you for when you make an Olympic team. But nothing prepares you for what happens when you don't. #SadButTrue

Aw, (((Jeremy Ten))))

Anyway, here's a fun column from Washington Post writer Robert Samuels. I laughed so much reading it! I think we could all relate to his figure skating watching adventures. He's also blogging during Sochi, so worth noting here.

I'll post a thread on the Edge for more discussion too: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...dfafae-8819-11e3-833c-33098f9e5267_story.html

Loved this video of yesterday's celebration for Polina Edmunds at her school, Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif.

The celebration features Olympians Brandi Chastain and Kerri Walsh. http://www.ktvu.com/videos/news/san-jose-olympians-brandi-chastain-and-kerri-walsh/vCPpfN/

Really inspiring, so cool that Polina had such a nice sendoff!

Phil Hersh also has a story about Patrick Chan practicing in Sochi this morning, one of the first top competitors to do so: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...han-gets-early-jump-20140201,0,1072998.column

ETA. This was meant as a reply to apgold re Tara and Johnny's joint twitter account.

I heard this sometimes happens when you start a twitter account--one of twitter's glitches, presumably. Their Instagram account seems to be working fine though: http://instagram.com/taraandjohnny

Tara and Johnny clearly have a great dynamic

Of course they also post on their personal accounts. They offered a view from their broadcast position at the rink yesterday: http://instagram.com/p/j4REhGBhQH/

The arena is gigantic. I like the blue interior :)

Looks like quite a few US skaters are stopping in Germany on their way to Sochi: http://instagram.com/p/j_b2qnzXCk/

I'm guessing that since Jeremy is already in Sochi, he will skate the SP for the team competition?

Also Tara and Johnny's joint twitter is up and running again:

Tara and Johnny ‏@TaraandJohnny 19h

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay! Twitter thought we were fake, but we're all natural! Please enjoy. ❤️T&J

Very nice reminiscence about Alexei Mishin's kindness and Olympic spirit -- from Coach Tom Zakrajsek's Facebook page. Long-ish, but worth reading.

(Tom Z will be in Sochi as a coach of Paul Bonifacio Parkinson of Team Italy.)

Looks like quite a few US skaters are stopping in Germany on their way to Sochi: http://instagram.com/p/j_b2qnzXCk/ ...

As an aside: all Team USA athletes (from all sports, not limited to figure skating) are passing through Munich for team processing.

Respect to Matt Lauer , who stood next to Castelli/Shnapir on the Today show this morning -- and who still managed to interview them without asking about their heights and their difference in height, LOL. (It was a nice interview discussing the team event, the support they are receiving from Rhode Island (in Marissa's case) and the Boston area, Simon's roots in Russia, etc.)

OTOH, Lauer said [I'm paraphrasing], "Everyone thinks the glamour sport of the Winter Games is figure skating, but I think it is women's hockey." :eek:hwell: Not surprisingly, he said so as he was interviewing some Team USA women's hockey players. (He went on to say how competitive women's hockey is and how exciting to watch.)

Agreed - it's always nice when interviewers stay clear of the blindingly obvious. (My "favourite" being when the athlete is in tears, distraught and looks like their life has lost all meaning and the journalist asks: "So, things didn't go very well for you today. How do you feel?" and shoves mike into athlete's face.) Also, how tedious must that get to answer time and time again? I know that when I'm asked the same question or hear the same joke about my quirks for the fifty-eleventh time, it gets really tedious. And the poor athletes must always be cheerful about it at all times - else they are nasty, unpleasant, Bad People. Ooops! That was a bit of a rant, wasn't it? :slink:
