LOL, after 2006 my friend and I (the one I used to watch all the skating with) would kid with each other: "Don't make me go all Barbara Fusar-Poli on you!" And then GLARE...

I dunno, people said Chan was a lock for gold coming into these games... don't declare the winners just yet.

Who are those people. I certainly never thought that and many others on this forum didnt. Of the 4 favorites coming in Chan was by far the least secure, heck he wasnt even the favorite anymore by the time the mens short program and even less after it finished. Davis & White are in a very secure favorites role now, and ice dance unlike the other 3 disciplines isnt particularly slippery. It will take a rare and unusual mistake in one of the programs for them to lose.

For the last four years, at every single competition, it has ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS comes down to
1. who hits their levels
2. how well they are performed.

Each of the Marlie/Voir ubers has been quick to point out any possible flaw or mistake made by the other team, but again it will come down to levels and performance. Marlie has always started strong and refined things. Voir always starts out a bit more in sketch mode, and then progresses more exponentially over the course of a season. And by the end it's always very close and always comes down to levels and performance. I don't see why this Olympics will be any different.

I didn't realize there were 4 favorites for men's Olympic gold; it was always going to come down to Hanyu vs. Chan. I suppose you are saying that Fernandez and Ten were the other 2 favorites and if that is the case, then I emphatically say that no, Chan was not less secure than Fernandez and Ten, particularly given how horribly Fernandez and Ten skated all season in the lead up to Sochi. It was clear though that Hanyu had become the ISU's new golden boy and that Chan would need mistakes from him in addition to his own solid performance in order to win. The first part of the equation (mistakes from Hanyu) definitely came to fruition in a big way, but unfortunately for Chan, he did not deliver a solid performance on the world's biggest stage in order to win. Chan didn't need to be clean after Yuzuru's flawed skate. Had he landed the 3Salchow and 2Axel cleanly, I believe he would be our men's gold medalist even with the hand down on the 2nd 4toe and the big step out of the 3Axel. Sadly, this performance is going to replay in his head for the rest of his life and for that I feel sorry for him. He will need a lot of time to fully get over this personal disappointment.

I feel sorry for Chan, too. He has to know that last night (after Hanyu's less-than-stellar skate) was the best chance any Canadian man ever had to win the OGM at last, because in previous Games the main opponent had skated very well and it would have come down to inches. And he couldn't close the deal. It must sting terribly, and as musesk8r says, he'll replay this performance in his head for the rest of his life.

how did short dance turned into a Patrick Chan discussion

Haha! I was just wondering that, thought I was on the men's thread. Not that I mind hee hee!

Anyway, Good luck to all the Dance teams, I hope both the SD's and LP's are stellar and not a letdown like the men's, that was so sad :(

I always have to roll my eyes when D/W have one set of out of sync twizzles and V/M fans go on and on about how it's a huge error whereas when Tessa nearly wipes out on hers to the extent that it affects the levels and then they're all like "oh that was just a small break."

I didn't realize there were 4 favorites for men's Olympic gold;

You misinterpreted what I meant. I meant of the 4 gold medal favorites over the 4 disciplines (Chan, Kim, V&T, D&W) going into Sochi, Chan was always the most shaky and most likely to lose. Yes even before the SP anyone not named Chan or Hanyu winning the gold would have been a long shot, and after the SP it turned from long shot to no shot.

Anyway lets focus on the SD since this isnt a thread about the men. I think the SD will be absolutely huge to how the event plays out. Here are some things I look at its significance:

1. V&M must be within 1 point of D&W if they have any chance of the gold.
2. B&S must be 3rd and by a good margin if they are going to win the bronze here.
3. P&B will be hard to keep out of the bronze if they make the final flight. The others will want to try and push them down in the SD, their weakness, and keep them out of the final flight.
4. W&P must make a big mark in the SD if they have any chance at the bronze.
5. No team who doesnt make the final flight will medal.

Only posting here because Chemistry and I are going tag crazy on this thread! Too bad we have to wait less than 24 hours for the SD.

So far, the judging of the pairs and men events have been really quite good. The right people are in the right places, I think. An argument can be made either way that Chan and Hanyu could have switched places, but I really think it was lost in the short program. Hanyu was stellar in the short, and Patrick had a small mistake. It wasn't about the quads. It was about the axel, which Chan has struggled with for a long time. When its on, its good. But it wasn't really on for the short or free. One can argue that the PCS and GOE was a little over the top in the pairs, but it was more for all the teams, so it was good.

Now I hope for absolutely diligent and real judging in the dance. None of the nonsense we saw at COR, GPF and even the Team event. Same set of standards applied to all teams. Same scale of values in GOE and PCS for all teams. And adherence to the rules, all of them, not just personal preference or national preference. Of all the disciplines of skating, I think the biggest microscope on the sport of skating will be on ice dance. So let's see marks that are consistent with what is put on the ice on the day of competition. Let's make sure the SPORT has some integrity.

I still dont understand anyone who thinks Chan would have won the SP had he done the triple axel cleanly. Even if he got the same GOE as Hanyu on the triple axel he would have been behind in points, and no way would a clean triple axel by Chan match the scores Hanyu who has a way better one get on that jump anyway. Then since he didnt win the LP either, all else remaining the same the result would have still been the same. I think who should have won the bronze is a way stronger argument than who should have won the gold in the mens which pretty much nobody is talking about. However you could make a case Fernandez or Machida should have beaten Ten.

Even if judging in other events has been good and better than usual, it doesnt mean the dance will be. Dance for decades has bee the problem event of the sport. North Americans say it is better now only since NA teams are always coming 1-2, so the bias of NA skating experts and past champions just automaticaly says it is better, but whether it is or not in reality is hard to say. There has been alot of people wondering about the scores of D&W of late, especialy when they won the GPF with their worst FD of the year including shaky twizzles over a perfect V&M who had by far their best outing of the year. There is real question over the scores of Bobrova & Soloviev this year, and some who think Pechalat & Bourzat and Weaver & Poje have been undermarked at times this year. I think the judging is most likely to be suspect of all the events at these Games in ice dancing, just like usual in an Olympic Games.

This is exactly what I think

D/W beat there season best in the LP with a performance which was far from their best(slower than usual, twizzles out of sync, less interpretation, no particulary good edge work).

I just hope every couples will skate their best, and that the judges will judge what they see.

I actually like D&W more than V&M and would really like to see them win the OGM, but I was strongly in disagreement with the Grand Prix final result as it was clear to me that was D&W not at their best and V&M skated the best they had in a couple years. That event was a major red flag. I dont understand the gap between them in the Team Event scoring whatsoever either, even though I agreed with D&W winning both dances. The FD gap was just stunning.

For all the fear of how Julia will be scored, I think the dance is the most likely to have some fudgy judging. I hope D&W win but I also hope they deserve it. I hope anyone but B&S wins the bronze, but I hope ultimately whoever skates best gets it (even if that happens to be B&S). A Russian team winning silver over V&M would be an impossible result to justify if it happens, unless V&M have a disaester. The others have improved, and the chasm gaps from D&W and V&M to the rest is sometimes irritating as well, but in truth the others arent at the level they should be able to beat them either, and if that happens in Russia well...

I love going to the event page on sochi2014.com - especially when waiting for results... so clean and easy...

I love the Sochie2014 results pages. They're awesome. I love the speed events (luge, skeleton, speed skating). You can "watch" as the competitors go!
I like it too. I like having "planned elements" in hand. There is one slight flaw, though, as I found out with the scores for Jason Brown. The display of elements has a limit and if there are too many, the Sochi page can't hold them all. I don't think it will be a problem in dance as there aren't as many elements, but it's something to be aware of.

I must also add that some of the photos on the Sochi site look like mug shots. Chock and Bates, for example, look like Bonnie and Clyde. Evan looks almost scary.

Lol I know! I think the reality show for V/M have really turned me off to them. I wonder how Charlie and Meryl feel about being on the show (especially Meryl since the editing makes it look like she's this bitchy ice queen)

I don't expect Tessa and Scott had all that much control over what editing was done on the show. I've often heard that people on reality shows are shocked to see how the editing has changed what they said or meant. That may be true here. I wouldn't't let the show effect your enjoyment of their skating.

I think the way the rivalry is portrayed in the show is waaaay overdone, but really entertaining
I mean, it's pretty hilarious they basically made the cold ice queen out of Meryl, who in reality, is such a sweet girl.

Alhough it is kind of sad when one thinks about how close the four were back in 2010. But with D/W reaching the level of V/W, that was probably bound to happen.
