You know that the technical panel has to agree on the call after a review, right? The Assistant Technical Specialist can't give a UR call by themselves if not even one other person agrees.
Yes, I do know. I just think it's interesting that a technical caller known for being strict was overruled when he thought a certain jump was fully rotated.

I don't know what happened to Anna at GPF, she seemed so nervous. That was weird. But I think she can jump the 2A. It is probably fairer for Alena to go, but I have a feeling that Russia is sending retirement vibes to Alena. Well, saying that Sotnikova who is only 17 deserves a rest and relax is ridiculous, look at Lipnitskaya. What Julia did competition wise this season as a 15 year old is the really remarkable thing and she is going to Worlds.

Yu-Na had a choice in 2010. She had voluntarily committed to going to 2010 Worlds at the beginning of the season, though, and didn't change her mind even though mentally she obviously wasn't in the right mindset. It had nothing to do with keeping spots for Korea, though, because if so, that same reasoning would mean she's competing at 2014 Worlds.

nope.. yuna had a choice... true there was pressure for her to compete.. but she still showed up..honored her commitment when she said before vancouver that she will skate in the world championship.. and didn't withdraw even with a disaster sp..

If that's true then good for her.:) Lord knows she looked as though she wanted to be anywhere but on the ice at worlds in 2010.

But the same still holds true for Adelina; she doesn't have to be there in order for Russia to keep their spots. I do think she and Julia would have a better shot than Julia and Anna, but Anna is capable of skating well enough to stay in the top 10 which could get Russia that 3rd spot back, and I'm almost positive the two of them will manage to retain the two spots they already have.

Jaylee, I disagree about this being the best time ever for Adelina to win a medal. If Mao and Carolina were not competing, I'd agree with you. Next season seems like a better time. Mao, Carolina, Akiko, possibly Kanako will be gone which will automatically bump Adelina up several spots. She'll come in as one of the top 3 veterans (along with Julia and Gracie) instead of one of the top 6 or 7. Her odds should be better next year than they are this year. Of course there will be new skaters entering the field which can always shake things up, but she'll have seniority which still tips the odds in her favor...

No surprising WDs yet. I never expected Chan, Sotnikova, Pechalat & Bourzat, Suzuki, or Virtue & Moir for instance to compete. I do think Chan and Sotnikova, especialy Chan, might return to competition at some point. I am still waiting for the first surprising WD, maybe D&W (who I assume are retiring but also assumed they would skate a final worlds).

Pechalat & Bourzat and Suzuki are competing. D/W are out--they're going to be on Dancing With the Stars.

I was like "What!? She withdrew?!" I thought I'd missed something. I had to run back to look at the entries. I really hope Akiko has a great final competition at worlds.

I'm not so sure about Anna P?? She got last at GPF and at Russian Nationals placed 8th. Behind Serafima Sakhonavich and Alexandra Proklova both of which are Juniors. I guess I could see her beating Polina and maybe even Ashley but I don't think I'd bet on that. The Russian Fed really has no problem riding on Yulia's 15 yr old back but seemingly chooses Adelina time and time again as the blessed one. Grrrr!! Nobody worked harder than Yulia this year. Especially in Russia!

Well, I can't see into the future, so sure, it may be that next year is easier than this year. It can't be proven definitively either way. :) But I see as many factors indicating that Worlds will only get tougher, not easier, and it is unlikely that Adelina will ever go into Worlds on such a high as now, when she's the newly crowned OGM, because...well, there is no Olympics for another 4 years. ;)

- Overall, the depth of the ladies field is increasing rapidly, from other countries, and from Adelina's own country. If Russia secures 3 spots for 2015 Worlds, then next year, Adelina will have not one but TWO competitive Russian ladies to compete with.
- Gracie Gold is trending upwards. Her programs this year may not have been the best fit for her, but given how quickly she adjusted to working with Frank Carroll, she's only going to come back even stronger. (Gracie is hungry for a world title NOW, so it'll be interesting to see how she does.)
- Carolina and Mao would be tough competition for Adelina, no doubt about that. But she did beat them at the Olympics, and even if she wasn't going to beat them again here, that's still one spot left on the podium.
- It's also true that Carolina, Mao, Akiko, and possibly Kanako will leave after this year's worlds...but Polina Edmunds will be back next season and she's only likely to improve. Zijun Li will also improve (this injury-plagued season really pulled her down). Elena Radionova will be eligible. So for as many veterans that leave, as many newcomers are likely to improve and have a chance to build their own reputation.
- Adelina's programs were "approved" by the judges at the Olympics, but Adelina will have to start over from scratch next season with programs that everyone will scrutinize. Maybe they'll be great, maybe they won't be, but she has the judge-approved, audience-audience friendly programs now. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

So, there's no way to definitively prove that 2014 Worlds would be easier for Adelina to win a world medal than 2015 Worlds. But I can say this: competing at Worlds now gives you a better chance at getting a world medal than not competing.

So, Adelina is not going to worlds. So disappointed. I really wanted to see her get those fantastic scores again.

No arguments there.

I definitely agree about the level (and volume) of talent coming out of Russia. I think Adelina is a solid top 3 in her country with Julia and now Elena Radionova, but there are a number of up-and-comers who can shake things up. Anna and Adelina were going head-to-head for the first half of the season. I do feel Adelina's seniority in her country will be invaluable for her (4 national titles and now that OGM as well). From all indications she's getting the hang of competing and not folding under pressure (I'm still shocked she skated so well in Sochi). If she can maintain a decent level of consistency, she should be in great shape moving forward to always be a gold medal threat.

I do think Gracie has made amazing strides this year. I was not much of a fan of hers but she's turned me around this season. Once the veterans make their exit, she's a solid gold medal threat moving forward as well. Two great programs and some more work on projecting and engaging an audience, Gracie will be Golden. ;) Polina is looking good moving forward as well. I love Zijun but she's going to have to step it up if she wants to compete with Adelina, Julia, Gracie, Polina, etc. She's got the goods but she's too reserved in her delivery. She needs more energy and umph in her performances. She floats along beautifully but next to the huge jumps of Gracie and Adelina, the wow factor of Julia and the content of Polina, Zijun has got her work cut out for her.

I'm really excited for this next quad. I'm going to miss Yu-Na, Carolina, Mao and the others, but this is shaping up to be another exciting 4 years of skating.

I don't even know why this upsets or surprises me at all but....Grrr

Yeah I think it's obvious leonova has been retired! She was better than pogorilaya at the most important part of the season. Now pogorilaya does cor final and gets worlds?

Anna p can be good or totally lose the 2a

It's really not worth risking her life

Yes, the next quad reminds me of the 2006 outlook after all the veterans emptied out. 2010-2014 was the quad where the veterans stayed in but the newcomers hadn't fully come into their own.

Probably not. That girl is hungry, hungry, hungry. I think she'll be on a mission to prove that the individual event was a fluke.

Oh, I'm very sorry Denis won't go to WC.
But it can be a good chance for Machida to win a medal.

Yu-Na didn't have a choice in 2010. She had to compete b/c there was no one else to compete for Korea who had a hope of placing in the top 10 (Min-Jung Kwak was the only other competitor for Korea and she finished in 22nd place :sarcasm:). Yu-Na didn't want to go and the performances she turned in that year were pretty terrible by her standards, but she had to go to keep Korea's spots for the following season.

Adelina doesn't have to compete for Russia. Julia has a great shot at placing top 5 if not on the podium, and Anna can do enough to stay in the top 10 as well...then there's Alena and Liza T. Russia has enough depth that Adelina's presence isn't necessary for them to keep their two spots...it's possible Julia and Anna can get 3 spots back.

At first I wanted to see Adelina compete as well...but I definitely think she made the right decision by sitting this one out. It is very unlikely she will top the performances she had in Sochi. By sitting out worlds, she can end her season on a high note not only b/c she "won" in Sochi but b/c she delivered two excellent performances.

Of course, people who hate her are going to find fault w/ her skipping worlds this year by saying she's scared and whatnot, but the truth of the matter is it's a smart decision. Showing up unprepared would be suicide. Better to enjoy the success of her win and come back fresh next season.
100% agree.
It's so nice to see the nasty people are loving that she has withdrawn (!). No matter what Adelina does it's going to be hate, hate, hate.
I hope she is enjoying all that comes with being a worthy Olympic Champion & returns next season.
