Debussy's "Syrinx" for unaccompanied flute is one of my all-time favorites. If you like "L'Apres-midi d'une Faune," hope you'll give this a listen. I'd love to see a skater use it, probably for an exhibition. It would need a superb choreographer...

Another gorgeous piece is Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. I especially love the 2nd movement (9:55 in the video below).

No jumps needed -- just deep, soft edging. My dream skaters for this one are Virtue & Moir.

Something very special: Torvill/Dean + YoYo Ma + a Sarabande from one of the Bach Cello Suites (not sure which :disapp:)

Apollo 13 - the movie was full of great music. The score is appropriately epic.

Paul Wylie did a lovely section based on the launch into space, at the Grinkov memorial.

Skatedreamer, Vanshilar, and the rest of you, some wonderful selections! And remember Chopin's polonaises, which have that powerful rhythm. Two other piano pieces that have a polonaise-ish rhythm are Brahms' Ballade opus 118 no. 3 and Rachmaninoff Prelude Opus 23 no. 5.

the Brahms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbSrtVXh8x0

the Rachmaninoff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXU7I_Yyi2Y

Warning: if you listen to these, you might end up with goosebumps and start choreographing something yourself. I always do!

Has anyone done a skate to Cloud Atlas's soundtrack yet? I just love the end title music, but it might be too slow (even near the end?)? Or not enough places to throw in the punctuating jumps?

I'll love anyone forever who does it. It's so buoyant and affirming and loud. :)

Oh goodness! I forgot about the Cloud Atlas soundtrack! I would love for someone to skate to it as well :) or they can skate to this song instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi35XQjFV_A Although the beginning is slow, the ending is perfect for a powerful step sequence and a final pose.

ps. The song is Outro by M83. It was used in the Cloud Atlas trailer!

Oh wow thanks! I haven't seen many of them before. I'm still looking through them but:
1) Wow I totally didn't expect Yamaguchi's last jump at all. Maybe more experienced skaters could see it coming but it just took me by complete surprise.

I agree. That was a surprising triple toe. I think it's my favorite performance of the 8 Fantasie Impromptus. Anyone know if Kristi would get bonus points for the interesting entrance? It's at 3:10 in this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYGC...E2wcpjPOqmAMR6 Or is that considered a triple toe with just an interesting entrance? Blah. If that was a Sandra Bezic job, I'll have to temper my criticism of her. :)

I'm barely more than a novice on scoring these days. :p

It's really interesting seeing Irina and Sarah as such young skaters too. Irinia especially doesn't even look like herself. I had no idea she did the double Biellman so early in her career. 1994! (I'm definitely not the biggest fan out there so I give myself a pass. :) I also don't remember Mao being so fabulous back then but I didn't pay that much attention in 2007-8.

I was watching "On the Waterfront" for the umpteenth time last weekend and found myself wondering whether a skater had ever used that music (see recent thread: Signs You're Obsessed with Figure Skating"). The film has an incredible Leonard Bernstein score with wonderfully dramatic, angular rhythms. Not even sure it would work but would love to know if anyone has ever tried it.

Yes to Cloud Atlas! I thought it would actually have been perfect for Aljona and Robin but she wanted The Nutcracker ...

From Cloud Atlas I think the sextet is the best one: http://youtu.be/rdiLxyGH8Lg (this can be cut down to 4 minutes, it's just a loop of the same piece)

If someone's going to use the Rach 2 again, let's refrain from the first movement since Mao and Mishkutenok / Dmitriev have already done them to perfection.
The second movement is lovely, but on one could top Lu Chen's from 96 worlds.
The third movement is ripe for picking though, especially the triumphant closing moments. Has anyone done this section yet?
