Who do you think is the most decorated single figure skater of all time?

Katarina Witt is one skater that comes to my mine.

2 time Olympic Gold medalist
4 time World Champion
2 time World Silver medalist
Other than Sonja Henie, Katarina Witt is the only ladies single skater to win 6 consecutive European Champion ships.

Witt is one of the successful figure skaters of all times.

Other than Sonja Henie? Because she has 10 world championship medals, 6 european championship medals, and 3 olympic gold medals. No one really comes close to matching that.

An interesting question. I suppose it depends on what it means to be "decorated." Take all the hardware the skater has ever won in competition at any level and weigh it?

The United States Figure Skating Association is fond of calling Michelle Kwan the "most decorated female skater in U.S. history," specifically to avoid having to say "the best," or language of this sort. Michelle won 40 somethings-or-other. She's loaded down.

A small reason I was sad that Yuna Kim wasn't awarded gold in Sochi...

It means that Katarina Witt is _still_ the only post Henie lady to win consecutive OGMs (and I prefer Kim about 7567 times over Witt, maybe 7568 times). And Kim was the last likely to ever do so.

Witt was an amazingly nervy competitor, but her skating, as skating, wasn't.. that... memorable....

I remember reading that the first world title Sonia Henie won was controversial. On a judging panel with 5 judges, 3 of them were Norwegian.

The three Norwegian judges placed Henie first, while the German and Austrian judges placed Szabo of Austria first!

The world championships for ladies were held in Oslo, Norway.

Given the result last week, it proves the Olympic medals are worthless anyway.

I like how Yuna said she doesn't want to be remembered as gold or silver winner, just remembered as a skater Yuna Kim.

I will have to check out if Witt did the GP and GPF's

Did I miss something? They did not have the GPF when Katarina Witt competed. The GPS started in 1995/96 season.

Upon till 1998 it was called Champion Series Final and the they changed it to the Grand Pre Final.

I was trying to get away from the topic of who was robbed at this Olympics and Yuna. Yuna is not one of the most decorated skaters of all time.

Yes now I remember the name. I also remember the excitement that skaters would earn money. But before 1995/96 season they did not have the final. So Katarina Witt would not have been in a final, which was my point

Michelle-5 World titles, 2 Olympic medals (silver and bronze), 3 World silvers and 1 bronze, 9 World medals total, medals in every competition from ages 15-23; never lower than silver in any competition from 1995-96 through 2000-2001 seasons. Nine US titles including 8 in a row, from 1998-2005. I would say she should be higher than 9-10.

Yagudin was a great skater

Most decorated skater, that I would not agree with. You just need to look at the history of figure skating to see who is most decorated skaters of all time.

Of course skaters from this day and age have more competitions when comparing to those who competed in the early 1900's. So the silver ware they collect today is much more than that of 100 years ago.

Food for thought.....To honor Witt in Calgary, North Korea issued miniature sheets of stamps with 3 pictures of With on the ice. Time magazine called Witt "the most beautiful face of Socialism"
