The 2014 olympics have barely ended and the host nation is showing a renewed thirst for conquest and expansion.

Will the 2014 games be remembered in similar terms as the Nazi olympics in 1936?

Will it help kill the olympics for good? (oh please, oh please, oh please)

Of cause not!
Berlin was a capital and is being one now. Sochi is a small town...

Would Russian win ice-hockey tournament we could say Partaigenosse Putin arranged that. But as it happened they won only in few minor disciplines. The FS success is an exchange for 2002 and 2010 games.
Nothing too close.

Again Adolf Hitler dreamed to run Olympics in Germany for every 4y. Putin is much more civilized. The next games bid planned after 2028 (he will not even be alive)

Oh, for goodness sake!

It is because of silly comments like this that I have been avoiding large portions of the forum since the Olympics finished.

I thought it would be safe by now, but evidently not...

RUSSIA WON THE 2014 OLYMPICS. GET OVER IT!!!

As for the Crimea, I would advise people to read up on the history of the peninsula during the 20th Century. And you will realise that a lot of the current crisis is because the media are more interested in stirring things up than they are in researching the background story.

History will show that the 2014 Olympics were a just a sham with all those smiling Russian faces hiding something more nefarious and that somehow Russia believed in the Olympic spirit. Russia should never ever be allowed to host an Olympic games ever again. They invaded a country just months before the 1980 Summer games and now they don't even wait a week after the Olympics ended to invade a sovereign nation again. Nothing changes Russia is still a county being run by barbarians.

Russia gave up any territorial claim to Crimea in 1994.

The sad thing is that Russia would prosper so much more if it depended on things such as trade and technological innovation rather than the old methods of militarism to gain prestige. I'm saying this as an American who wishes with all my heart that we had not gotten ourselves embroiled in two foreign wars in the early 2000s. We have lost far more than we gained from taking that path.

The Ukraine isn't a danger to Russia. That's like saying that a bush is a danger to a giant redwood tree, or that an owl is a threat to a lion. Napoleon couldn't take Russia down, and he ruled most of Europe at the time. Military action just destabilizes another of Russia's borders, and to what benefit? The West isn't an enemy of Russia. Russia's true enemies come from the east and the south, and it is alienating potential allies in Europe and North America just for the satisfaction of having a greater say in the Crimea. It doesn't matter if every citizen of the Crimea is an ethnic Russian, those people are not any safer during armed combat. Wasteful, wasteful.

Russia could/would be one of the richest countries in the world if they had ever established real property rights. But they haven't so they aren't.

I think you lost all your credibility with the Nazi comparisons. Like seriously, stop. It's embarrassing.

This is nonsense! Read up on the current situation. Russia already had leased naval bases in Ukraine! Russia was already there. The government is violently anti Russia anything.

Agree - before anyone forms an opinion on the current situation, please do research about Crimea/Ukraine/Russa that is not coming from the U.S. television media. The US media is very anti-Putin and is going to latch at any opportunity to show Putin as some super evil dictator (Google Search Images - Putin puppies; this has nothing to do with the current situation but very cute pictures  )

Wrong. It's a rather apt analogy. Putin may not be the sociopath Hitler was, but Putin is pretty much an autocrat.

Putin is still trying to bring back the USSR. He's said it many times that he considers the worst thing in the 20th century was the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He's using flimsy excuses as a pretext to invade countries that Russia has a treaty with acknowledging it's sovereignty.

He's an egocentric nationalist with an inferiority complex. The Hitler analogy is apt.

Regardless of whether or not some minorities in Ukraine support Russian intervention (which are only there because Stalin was a evil man and systemically "Russified" many parts of the non-Russian USSR.) They are actively NOT letting Ukraine determine their own destiny.

If you think someone like Putin is going to stop at Crimea, you're hilarious.

This isn't the first time he's done this, btw. IMO, the headlines should be "THE RUSSIAN ARMY! Coming soon to former Soviet Republics near you!"

I agree. Sometimes "body language" says a great deal about a person. Notice how Putin seats when he is at an international conference or one on one with another world leader. He is slightly slouched with his feet apart and has a very bored and somewhat irritable look on his face. His comment that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was the major geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century is laughable. Surf the web to see the right wing thugs beating up and harassing gay people in the new " Putin Russia".

I am wondering how far the frustrated trolls can go in their desperation..
Now it's Hitler. Is there any boundary in their maniacal creativity?

Try to "lessen" it all you want, but the analogy is apt. Just wait till he starts letting people beat and harass minoriti.... OH WAIT, he already has.

This has less to do with Sochi (Putin was using Sochi as Hitler used the Berlin Olympics, though: To show everyone that he brought Russia back to world prominence) and more to do with Putin. This incursion into foreign-held land is just another arm of his "Russian superiority" plan.

Right, cause we all know US didn't mindlessly drone kill hundreds of thousands for some barrels of oil right? So I guess SLC 2002 is the same as Hitler too.

Different president, buddy. Also, we were attacked. Anyway, the past misdeeds of Bush are not the topic here. Your logic is flawed. (See: Ad Hominem)

Aside: We had no right being in Iraq. Afganistan is a different topic. Also, many people in the government are trying to make drone strikes more transparent/take it out of the CIA's hands.

Lol this post is so outrageous. The Russians in Ukraine have been in some of those areas for centuries! Especially the Russians of Crimea. Fact it wasn't until this current government that Russians were considered unwelcome invaders of Ukraine! And good luck trying to cleanse ukraine of all Russians!

Yeah, that was my point - he's another dictator using the games to help his international credibility.

Fact it wasn't until this current government that Russians were considered unwelcome invaders of Ukraine! And good luck trying to cleanse ukraine of all Russians!

No one wants to "cleanse" the Ukraine of Russians. But what good does military action do? The Ukraine is exactly in the same geographical position it was before. The weather remains the same. The population remains the same. But some buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Some people have stopped doing their jobs and either been jailed or have taken up arms. University schedules have been disrupted, suspending educational progress for ethnic Ukrainians and Russians alike. So Russia has just expended a lot of money and effort to go backwards.

The value of the ruble has gone down overnight on world markets.

The Russian treasury will have a commitment to spending money on military supplies and personnel instead of, say, health care or infrastructure. Sochi, positioned (at great expense) as an international tourist attraction, will not be the kind of destination it was planned to be, because who wants to visit near a war zone? And instead of potential allies against terrorism, Russia now has a lot of countries who are mad at it and who will suspend trade.

Russians are always complaining about "the West." So who are Russia's natural allies? Iran? China? Syria? I hope Putin enjoys these bedfellows, because he's kicked half the world out of his room when he could have been building strong ties, and a stronger Russia, with them.

I'm not saying this to criticize. I'm saying this to point out that, like the law of gravity, certain other laws of nature always apply. Look at the U.S. as a lesson. Leaving any moral considerations aside, the American economy has suffered from our wars of this decade. Just the medical costs of wounded survivors will be huge. Its prestige in the world has suffered, which always has economic repercussions. Russia will also be subject to these laws of nature, when for a lot less effort, it could have survived amicably with the Ukraine and the rest of Europe for uneventful years to come. The parades that Russia had at Sochi were a way to show the world Russia's cultural and economic excellence. Russia's next triumphal parades will have no such audiences.
